A dear friend described it this way. She hands one end of a stick to God and says, here, Lord, I give this to You. And before long He gently says, dear child, you must let go of the other end. And she simply cannot.

Most of us know exactly what she means.

Trusting God with our own lives is one thing. Trusting Him with the people we love most is something else entirely. These are our children. Our family. The people we would give our lives for without hesitation. And the idea of releasing them fully, of letting go of that other end of the stick, can feel less like faith and more like abandonment.

But if we are honest about what is actually happening when we hold on, we often find something beneath the love. A fear that God's outcome might not match our wishes. A quiet suspicion that we know what is best for the people we love, or at least that we need to stay involved enough to influence the result. We say we are trusting Him while privately hoping He will simply do what we already want.

Psalm 55:22 does not ask us to become uninvolved or detached from the people we love. It asks us to cast our cares on the Lord, to release the outcomes we have been gripping, and to trust that the God who sustains us will also sustain them. He will not let go of the people we hand Him. That is the assurance that makes it possible to open our hands.

And when we simply cannot let go despite knowing we should, that is itself a prayer. Lord, I cannot do this on my own. Give me the grace to get out of the way. The Holy Spirit is more than capable of loosening what our own willpower cannot release.

Letting go is not the end of our involvement. It is the beginning of a better kind, one where we follow God's leading rather than our own strong desires, where our words and actions are shaped by His wisdom rather than our anxiety. Our peace is not found in our control. It is found in the God who holds what we release.

Ponder Tonight

The image of holding one end of a stick while handing the other to God is one of the most honest pictures of partial surrender most of us will recognize from our own experience. True trust eventually requires releasing both ends.

The fear underneath our inability to let go of loved ones is often not distrust of God's power but distrust of His outcomes, a worry that His will might not match our desires for the people we love. That is the deeper surrender being asked of us.

Releasing control of the people we love does not mean becoming passive or uninvolved. It means following God's lead in how we engage rather than our own anxiety, which actually makes our involvement more effective and more peaceful.

When we cannot let go on our own despite knowing we should, asking the Holy Spirit for the grace to surrender is itself an act of faith. We do not have to manufacture what we do not have. We simply have to ask.

Your Evening Prayer

Father,

Thank You for always being there for our families. We know that You are in control and that the people we love could never be in better hands, including, perhaps especially, our own. And yet we confess how hard it is to let go of the other end of the stick.

Help us overcome our reluctance to release what we have been holding so tightly. Help us trust not just Your power but Your outcomes, even when they differ from what we would choose. Where we cannot let go on our own, send Your Spirit to loosen our grip and bring the peace that can only come from leaving it all in Your hands.

You will not let go of them. That is enough for us to open ours.
