What does it even mean for God to be good?

Psalm 42 sits with that question. Why are you downcast, my soul? Why so disturbed? It is not a tidy faith that asks that question. It is an honest one. And the answer the Psalmist arrives at is not a resolution of the circumstances. It is a choice to put hope in God anyway, and a declaration that praise is still coming, even now.

What gets in the way of that posture, if we are willing to look honestly, is often pride. The quiet belief that we know how things should have gone. That our perspective, shaped by our one limited vantage point in one moment of history, is sufficient to judge what a sovereign and eternal God should have done differently. We are one person, with one lens, seeing one small piece of a story far larger than we can comprehend. And yet we are confident we know better.

That is not a condemnation. It is simply what it means to be human. And the humility of recognizing our finitude, of accepting that we are created rather than Creator, is the very thing that opens us back up to the God whose goodness is not diminished by our disappointment in Him.

His character is not impacted by our opinion of it. He remains good. He remains for us. And His grace is forever available, not because life is never disappointing, but because He never is.

Ponder Tonight

Honest disappointment with God, brought to Him in prayer rather than nursed in silence, is a form of intimacy rather than faithlessness. The Psalmist modeled exactly this in Psalm 42.

The root of most cynicism toward God, if examined carefully, is a form of pride, the belief that our limited perspective is sufficient to judge His sovereignty. Recognizing that is humbling and ultimately freeing.

We are one person with one lens seeing one small piece of an eternal story. The mystery of God is not a problem to be solved by our finite reasoning. It is an invitation to trust what we cannot fully understand.

God's goodness is not contingent on life going the way we hoped. His character holds independent of our circumstances, which means our disappointment, real as it is, does not change who He actually is.

Your Evening Prayer

Father,

In a world filled with disappointments and heartache, remind us that You are for us. You are a good God who delights in blessing Your children. Fix our eyes on You and Your purposes, even amid our pain.

Keep us humble as we surrender the prideful tendency to believe we know best. Teach us what it means to be human, to be created rather than Creator. Remind us that our perspective is limited and that Your goodness is not diminished by our inability to see the whole picture.

Gift us with Your guidance, wisdom, and hope. We choose to praise You, not because life is without disappointment, but because You are without blame, without blemish, and forever good.
