One of the great mysteries of faith is how we hold free will and God's sovereignty at the same time. We are given genuine freedom to choose, and God already knows all. Rather than letting that tension frustrate us, we can let it free us. We do not have to carry the weight of tomorrow because He already holds it.
For those who live with anxiety, "let go and let God" is not always a helpful or practical instruction. What is more honest is this: doing what we can to care for the body and mind God has given us, while also releasing what we cannot control into His hands. It is both and, not either or. Therapy and Scripture. Medication and prayer. Deep breathing and God's Word recited through it. Practical tools and a deepening relationship with Jesus. None of these things are in conflict.
God is not ashamed of our anxiety or our struggle to trust. He longs for us to come as we are. The question is simply whether we will.
Ponder Tonight
James 4:15 is not a call to passivity. It is a call to humility, the recognition that our plans exist within a sovereignty we did not create and cannot override, and that submitting to that sovereignty is wisdom rather than weakness.
Holding free will and God's omnipotence simultaneously is one of the genuine mysteries of the faith. But rather than a source of frustration, it can become a source of relief. We make real choices, and God already holds what we cannot.
For those with anxiety, letting go is rarely a single decision. It is a daily, sometimes hourly practice of returning what we have picked back up to the hands that were always better suited to hold it.
Practical care for our mental and physical health is not a failure of faith. It is stewardship of the body and mind God gave us, and it can coexist fully with trust, prayer, and a deepening relationship with Jesus.
Tonight's Scripture
"Instead, you ought to say, 'If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that.'" — James 4:15, NIV
Your Evening Prayer
Lord Jesus,
We are overwhelmed by fear and anxiety. When we think about the future, we get confused, weary, and worried. Please be with us here and provide the peace that only You can give.
While we want to be responsible and plan well, we also want to trust Your way and Your will over our own. Remind us that the future is already held by You, and that the weight we keep picking up was never ours to carry alone.
We love, praise, and thank You, Jesus.
Amen.
