Martin Luther’s story begins with a thunderstorm. A bolt of lightning struck near him, and in the terror of that moment he made a desperate bargain with God, promising to devote himself to ministry if his life was spared. What followed was years of relentless, exhausting effort to make himself worthy, confessing his sins for hours each day, working as hard as any human being could work to earn what cannot be earned.

And then Romans 1:17 opened before him. The righteous will live by faith.

The Holy Spirit revealed to Luther what his striving could never produce: that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not by any works or self-afflictions. It was not a comfortable revelation. It put him in direct conflict with the institution he had devoted his life to. He was excommunicated. His life was threatened. His reputation was destroyed in the eyes of many.

He was not ashamed of the gospel.

What Luther discovered was not a new idea but a recovered one, the truth that had always been there, waiting to be received. A righteousness not achieved but given. Salvation not earned but received through faith. He went on to translate the Bible into German so that ordinary people could read it for themselves, and the Reformation was born.

Paul’s declaration in Romans 1:16 sits at the beginning of the letter that changed Luther’s life. He is not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes. Not power in the cultural sense, not influence or prestige or approval, but the actual power of God to transform and redeem.

Tonight, on Reformation Day, that same gospel stands. Unchanged, undiminished, still doing what it has always done. The righteousness we could not produce has been given to us in Christ.

We can stand in that. We need not be ashamed of it.

Ponder Tonight

Luther’s breakthrough did not come from working harder at righteousness. It came from studying Scripture and receiving what God had already provided. The discipline of staying in the Word is what opened his eyes, and it is what continues to open ours.

Being unashamed of the gospel will cost something in every generation. For Luther it cost his position and nearly his life. For us it may cost comfort, approval, or belonging. The question is whether what the gospel offers is worth what it costs to stand in it publicly.

The gospel Luther rediscovered was not new. It was the truth of Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, always present in Scripture and waiting to be seen clearly again. That same truth is available to anyone who opens the Word with genuine hunger.

The Reformation reminds us that the church is always in need of being reformed by the Word of God. That work is not finished. Each generation receives the same gospel and is called to hold it faithfully.

Tonight’s Scripture

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.” — Romans 1:16, NIV

“For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith.’” — Romans 1:17, NIV

Your Evening Prayer

Father,

Thank You for the life of Martin Luther and for the boldness and courage he had in sharing Your truth with the world. Strengthen us today to stand firm and steadfast in the truth of the gospel. Lead us to be willing to risk our name and reputation to proclaim the truth of salvation through grace alone, through faith alone, through Christ alone.

Help us walk daily in Your Word. Let Your light shine through us, as it did through Luther so many years ago, to those who walk in darkness. May we never be ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
