During a season of illness in college, enduring iron infusions and surgery, encouragement came from a woman never met in person. Amy Carmichael, an Irish missionary who served in Japan and India, had been dead for decades. And yet her faithful endurance and trust in God during times of hardship spoke directly into the bleakness of that difficult season. One of her words in particular has stayed: hardly a life that goes deep but has tragedy somewhere within it.

The faithful who came before us are not simply historical figures to admire from a distance. They are, as Hebrews 12 describes them, a crowd of witnesses. The image is of a stadium full of people cheering on those still running the race. They have trodden this same path. They have left behind patterns and wisdom we can follow.

Part of the Christian life is learning to imitate those who wholeheartedly follow the Lord. Paul told the Corinthians to imitate him, just as he imitated Christ. We can do this by looking to the people around us whose faith is visible and real, a grandmother’s devotion, a friend’s prayer life, the way someone we admire handles suffering. And we can do it by reaching across centuries to the saints of old, learning from Francis of Assisi, Harriet Tubman, C. S. Lewis, Julian of Norwich, and countless others who ran faithfully before us.

We are never alone in this. Even when faith feels like a single candle in a great darkness, there are others bearing forth the same light. A vast company has gone before us, and one day we will join their voices in praising the One they followed through everything life brought them.

Until then, we run. With their example before us and their testimony behind us, we run.

Ponder Tonight

The cloud of witnesses in Hebrews 12 serves a practical purpose. They do not simply observe from a distance. Their lives provide patterns of faithfulness that we can follow when the race feels hard and the way forward is unclear.

Learning from those who have gone before us is not nostalgia. It is wisdom. The struggles they faced, the faith they maintained, the ways they trusted God through hardship, all of it is available to us as instruction and encouragement.

Paul’s instruction to imitate him as he imitated Christ reveals that discipleship has always been relational and observational. We learn what following Jesus looks like by watching people who do it, whether across a kitchen table or across centuries.

The anticipation of one day joining the cloud of witnesses and meeting those who encouraged us along the way is itself a form of hope, a reminder that this race ends not in exhaustion but in praise.

Tonight’s Scripture

“Since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” — Hebrews 12:1, NLT

Your Evening Prayer

Lord,

We are grateful that we are never alone in this walk of faith. Even when we feel like a single candle in a void of darkness, others are bearing forth Your light. So many have journeyed before us, leaving an example of what it means to love You wholeheartedly. Help us learn from their lives, applying the wisdom they teach so that we may be more illuminating vessels for Your Kingdom.

Thank You for all the memories we carry of those in our lives who followed You devotedly. We wait with anticipation for the day we will join them and the other saints in praising Your glorious name in eternity.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
