At nineteen, forty seemed ancient. Now, in the early fifties, getting out of bed in the morning has become its own kind of commentary on the human condition. Parts ache that did not used to ache. People who were once present are no longer here. There are naps after long days at work, a new and humbling reality. The cost of living a life past fifty has started to announce itself in ways that are impossible to ignore.

And yet.

A friend recently used the word wise. At nineteen, wisdom was nowhere near the list of aspirations. But here it is, something real and hard-won, a resilience born of years of watching God be constant through trials, something now available to pass on to those still in the earlier, testing stages of faith. The season that costs something is also, quietly, producing something.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 holds both realities without flinching. He has made everything beautiful in its time. That is not a promise that everything will feel beautiful while it is happening. It is the declaration of a God who sees the whole arc, who knows what a season is producing even when we cannot, and who has decided that where we are right now is the right place for now.

After a volcanic eruption, flowers grow that can only bloom in those particular conditions. After a forest fire, fireweed rises six feet tall, ablaze with color, against the backdrop of blackened trees. Some beauty requires exactly the conditions that felt like destruction. We rarely know that from the inside of it.

The true reason for certain painful phases may remain mysterious, at least to us. God sees the end from the beginning. He knows what this is about. And the trust required to receive a season we did not choose, without bitterness, knowing nothing will be wasted, is one of the deepest and most beautiful expressions of faith available to us.

Nothing is wasted. He is always there. And He is making something beautiful out of this, in His time.

Ponder Tonight

Ecclesiastes 3:11 does not promise we will understand what God is doing in every season. It promises He has made everything beautiful in its time, which means the beauty may only be visible in retrospect, from a vantage point we do not yet have.

The natural world offers some of the most honest pictures of how beauty can emerge from conditions that felt like destruction. Fireweed after a forest fire. Flowers on volcanic ash. What looked like an end was actually preparation for something that could only grow there.

Asking God for new eyes to see what is already present in a difficult season is not denial of the difficulty. It is the decision to look for Him within it rather than only looking for a way out of it.

Remembering the difficult seasons we have already survived, and how God was present and faithful in them, is one of the most grounding practices available when a current season feels unwelcome or hard to receive.

"He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end." — Ecclesiastes 3:11, ESV

Your Evening Prayer

Father,

We want to learn to receive the season we are in with humility, knowing You have permitted and possibly prescribed this time for our growth. Help us to be open to joy no matter the nature of the season. When we are at risk of feeling bitter, remind us that You are close and You are sovereign.

No phase of our lives will be wasted. You are always there with us, making something beautiful in Your time, even when we cannot yet see what it is. Thank You for that promise, and for the faithfulness that has proven it true again and again.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
