In J. R. R. Tolkien's short story Leaf by Niggle, an artist spends his days working on a painting of a tree he can never quite finish. Death comes before the masterpiece is complete, and the sorrow of leaving it undone follows him into whatever comes next. But in heaven, he finds the tree standing whole and alive, its leaves opening, its branches bending in the wind he had always imagined but could never quite capture on canvas. The unfinished work had not been lost. It had found its fulfillment somewhere beyond the limits of one human lifetime.

It is a picture worth holding tonight, at the close of a month.

July is ending, and for most of us, it is ending with a list of things still undone. Goals not yet reached. Projects set aside. Plans that did not unfold the way we hoped. And it is easy, in that moment of accounting, to feel the weight of the unfinished as a kind of failure.

But Psalm 57:2 was written by David from a wilderness hiding place, fleeing a king who wanted him dead. His circumstances were far from resolved. And still he cried out to the God who fulfills His purpose. Not David's purpose, achieved through David's effort alone. God's purpose, carried forward by the One whose plans are never thwarted by what a human life could not complete.

Proverbs 19:21 says it plainly. Many are the plans in the mind of a person, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. Our unfinished things do not catch Him off guard. He holds our days. He numbers them. And the good work He began in us will be brought to completion, not necessarily on our timeline or within the frame of one earthly life, but in His faithfulness and in His time.

We can safely surrender the unfinished threads tonight. Not as resignation, but as trust. The Great Finisher has never yet left His work incomplete.

Ponder Tonight

Tolkien's Niggle is a quietly profound picture of what it means to be a finite creature with infinite longings. We will likely all leave this life with unfinished work, and Scripture is honest about that. The comfort is not that we will finish everything, but that God will.

David's declaration in Psalm 57:2, made from a place of genuine danger and uncertainty, is a model for how to hold unfinished and unresolved things. Not by pretending they are finished, but by entrusting them to the God who accomplishes His purposes regardless of circumstances.

Philippians 1:6 is one of the most settled promises in Scripture. He who began a good work will bring it to completion. That applies not only to our spiritual formation but to everything God has set in motion through our lives, including what we could not finish ourselves.

Ending a month with surrender is not the same as ending it in defeat. It is the deliberate and trusting act of placing everything held and unfinished into hands far more capable than our own.

Your Evening Prayer

Great Finisher and Restorer of all things,

You know how often we worry about the things left undone. The projects not yet completed. The goals still waiting. The month ending with more on the list than we managed to cross off. Tonight we choose to entrust these things to You rather than carrying them into August with a spirit of anxiety or defeat.

You already hold our days in Your hands, numbering each one. You are not surprised by what we did not finish. And Your purpose for us will stand, regardless of what our human limitations could not accomplish.

We surrender our plans to You, O God, knowing that this life is not the end, and that the unfinished threads of our stories are safe in the hands of the One who completes all things.
