It is easy to distance ourselves from someone else's need. The old Polish proverb captures the impulse perfectly: not my circus, not my monkeys. Their situation, their problem, their burden to carry. We have enough of our own.

But Jesus draws a direct line between the people we are most tempted to look past and Himself. In the hungry, the stranger, the sick, the imprisoned, the overlooked and the struggling, He says: you see Me. As you did to the least of these, you did it to Me.

That reframes everything.

The teacher who stays after class not for a test score but for a child's actual flourishing is caring for Christ. The counselor working patiently toward someone's inner healing is wrapping arms around someone Jesus loves. The nurse who gives dignity to a patient in a difficult moment is treating that patient as Jesus Himself. The leader who chooses the wellbeing of the people they serve over the protection of their own status is living out the gospel in the most ordinary and profound way.

Our faith was never meant to stay inside the walls of a church building or the quiet space of a morning devotional. It was always meant to be lived out for the sake of the world. Christ poured Himself out for our redemption, and in response to that gift, we are invited to pour ourselves out in loving service to the people directly in front of us.

The question worth sitting with tonight is not whether we are called to serve. That question is already answered. The question is whether we have eyes to see Jesus in the people we are already serving, and in the people we have been tempted to dismiss as someone else's problem.

They are not someone else's problem. They are His brothers and sisters. And because of that, they are ours too.

Ponder Tonight

Matthew 25:40 does not describe an abstract theological principle. It is a startlingly concrete claim: the way we treat the people most easily overlooked is the way we treat Jesus Himself. That truth should reshape how we enter every room and every relationship.

Serving Christ in need does not always require dramatic acts of sacrifice. It often looks like the quiet, consistent, daily work of teachers, caregivers, counselors, and leaders who choose people over performance measures, dignity over efficiency, and presence over distance.

Asking what it would mean to incarnate the love of Christ in our specific profession or role is one of the most practical spiritual questions we can bring to God tonight.

Gratitude for those who have served us in Christlike ways, the doctors, teachers, mentors, and caregivers, is itself a spiritual practice worth pausing to offer before we drift off to sleep.

Your Evening Prayer

Lord,

Thank You for those who have served us in Your name. For the leaders who guided us toward flourishing, the teachers who gave us their time and attention, the doctors, nurses, counselors, and caregivers who treated us with dignity. Bless them, mighty God, and return to them the blessing they have poured out for others.

Father, we hear Your call to serve the people around us, to pour our lives out as You poured Yours out for us. Give us eyes to see Your presence in the faces of those who need us most, including the ones we have been tempted to distance ourselves from. May Your Spirit in us respond to Your Spirit at work in the lives of those around us.

Help us discern where we are called to serve, and give us the faithful boldness to enter that work.

In the name of the Father who creates, the Son who redeems, and the Holy Spirit who sustains.
