Home is supposed to be the steady place. The place of consistency and dependability, where we are most known and most ourselves. And yet, if we are honest, home is also the place where our least patient selves tend to show up. After a long and draining day, the piling dishes and the homework request and the spouse who needs our attention can bring out a version of us we would not recognize in a professional setting. We are often kinder to strangers than to the people we love most.

Peter writes to a community facing genuine hardship and uncertainty, and his instruction surprises us. Not stay strong. Not hold the line. Above all, keep loving one another earnestly. Forget every other thing you are thinking about. Love. No matter what.

It is a deliberate choice, not a feeling we stumble into. Some days it is effortless, carried on the momentum of a good morning and a kind exchange. Other days it is costly, requiring patience and forgiveness and grace that do not come naturally after an exhausting week. Peter is not calling us to perfect homes. He is calling us to persistent love, the kind that does not quit.

That love looks like choosing a soft response when a sharp one would be easier. Connecting before correcting. Offering grace at the end of a long day when the reserves feel empty. Practicing repair when something has been ruptured between people who are trying.

Jesus modeled exactly this. He loved tired, grumbling disciples. He loved people who misunderstood Him repeatedly. His love was never contingent on anyone's performance or perfection. And because His Spirit lives within us, we are not limited to loving in our own strength. His love begins to shape our character, reflecting His heart in the ordinary and unglamorous moments of home life.

A home where each person chooses, again and again, to love as Christ has loved becomes steady. Not because the circumstances are always smooth, but because the love underneath them holds.

May our homes be that kind of place.

Ponder Tonight

Peter's instruction to love earnestly comes in the middle of hardship, not on the other side of it, which means the call to love is not conditional on life settling down first. It is precisely the thing we do while things are still hard.

Love that covers a multitude of sins, as Peter describes it, is not love that pretends offenses did not happen. It is love that chooses not to keep score, that extends grace before the apology comes, and that returns to repair even when withdrawal would be easier.

Jesus loved people who frustrated Him, misunderstood Him, and fell asleep when He needed them most. That is the model available to us for loving the people in our own homes on their worst days and ours.

The steadiness of a home is not built on perfect circumstances or perfect people. It is built on the repeated, daily choice to love as Christ loves, which means it is always available, no matter what today looked like.

Your Evening Prayer

Lord Jesus,

May our homes reflect the steadiness of Your love. May we be extenders of grace even in the hard seasons, even on the days when patience ran out before the day did. May our hearts reflect Your heart, and may we love the way You love, not because it is always easy but because Your Spirit within us makes it possible beyond our own strength.

May our daily choices be an example of consistent love to the people who live closest to us and see us most clearly. And may our homes become a place of grace and rest to everyone who enters.
