A Prayer to Take Back Joy When You Can't Feel It

Quaker preacher John Woolman once experienced a vision of slaves producing the very goods he used in his daily life, and the weight of that revelation changed the way he lived. Reading his words prompts the same uncomfortable pause: where does the food we buy come from? The clothes we wear? The furniture in our homes? When that question is pursued honestly, what emerges is often fury, because much of what is available to us cheaply has been produced through inhumane conditions, forced labor, and the exploitation of children. The anger that rises in response to that reality is not wrong. It is appropriate. It is a sign that something in us still recognizes that the world should not be this way.

David experienced that same kind of anger in Psalm 52, written in response to the murder of the priests at Nob. Saul ordered their execution because one of them had helped David, and Doeg the Edomite carried out the massacre. David's grief and fury were real and raw. And yet Psalm 52 does not end with a call for revenge. It ends with David entrusting justice to God, trusting in His unfailing love, and anchoring himself in the character of the One who judges righteously. That is the movement this episode invites us into. Anger at injustice — racism, forced labor, exploitation, displacement, hunger — is not something to suppress or spiritualize away. It is something to bring honestly to God, who is the righteous Judge and whose own anger at evil dwarfs our own. He will make all things right. Until that day, we are called to walk in justice and mercy, holding our anger before Him and trusting His perfect timing.

Anger at injustice is not a sin — it is a sign that we still know things should not be this way. The appropriate response to human rights violations, exploitation, and oppression is grief and fury. God does not ask us to suppress those feelings. He invites us to bring them to Him.
David expressed anger to God without taking personal vengeance. Psalm 52 is a powerful example of bringing raw emotion before the Lord while still entrusting justice to Him. Honest expression and faith in God's judgment are not opposites — they belong together.
Injustice is not a distant issue — it touches our everyday lives. The clothes we wear, the food we buy, the products we use cheaply may carry a hidden cost paid by exploited workers and children. Awareness is the beginning of responsible, faithful stewardship.
Vengeance belongs to God — and His justice is perfect. We can rest in the knowledge that the righteous Judge sees every act of wickedness and will avenge it in His timing and according to His perfect judgment. That is not a passive response. It is a profoundly trusting one.
Until the day He returns to make all things right, we are called to walk in justice and mercy. Anger offered to God should produce action, advocacy, and changed habits — not bitterness or despair. Let it fuel a more intentional pursuit of justice in the spaces where we actually have influence.

A Prayer for You Today

O God of all justice, I bring to You today my intense anger and grief over the wrongs in the world — children forced into slave labor, individuals deceived into inhumane working conditions, and the painful reality that many items available for me to purchase were produced through exploitation. Lord, there are so many other acts of injustice in the world: racism, people displaced from their homes, individuals going without food, girls and women exploited because of who they are. These realities fill me with a restlessness that echoes what I know to be true: it should not be this way. But I trust in You, for You are just and good. Vengeance belongs to You, and You will avenge in Your timing and according to Your perfect judgment. Help me to walk in justice and mercy until the day You return to make all things right. A Prayer Expressing Anger at Injustices in the World

When you are the one who shows up in the darkest moments, physically or virtually present in a time of genuine crisis, you have an opportunity to steward God's light into a story that desperately needs it. That kind of presence is both a gift and a responsibility, and knowing how to offer it well matters enormously.

Jesus models this beautifully in the moments before the resurrection of Lazarus. He already knew what was about to happen, and yet He did not rush past the grief around Him to get to the miracle. When He saw Mary weeping, He wept with her. When He encountered Martha, He met her differently — offering conviction, truth, and firm footing, reminding her of exactly who He is. The same tragedy, two very different women, two very different responses. Jesus read the person in front of Him and responded in the language of her individual spirit. Mary needed someone to cry with her. Martha needed someone to anchor her in truth. Both were acts of profound love. Romans 12:15 distills this principle to its simplest form: mourn with those who mourn. When we come alongside someone who is broken, the Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives within us and is ready to guide us in exactly how to show up. We do not have to have the right words. We simply have to be willing to be used.

Presence matters more than perfect words. Jesus wept before He spoke. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer someone in grief is simply our willingness to show up and stay — without an agenda, without a solution, without rushing past the pain.
Different people need different kinds of comfort. Mary needed someone to cry with her. Martha needed truth and conviction to stand on. Reading the person in front of you and responding in the language of their spirit is one of the most loving things you can do.
The Holy Spirit guides us when we do not know how to help. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in every believer. When you feel unsure of what to say or do for someone who is hurting, ask Him to use you as a vessel and trust that He will.

A Prayer for You Today

Father God, what a holy and set-apart opportunity You have entrusted to us in loving someone who is beset with grief. We ask not only for Your peace to be poured upon the person who is aching, but we implore You to use us as Your mouthpiece in this delicate situation. Let us be used in this time for Your purpose and plan, and give us the wisdom of what to say, what to do, and how to show up for the person who is hurting. We thank You that You are ever present, ever loving, and ever mindful of each of us, just as You were for Mary and Martha outside Lazarus's tomb. May we glorify You in this process and place. A busy season of life, a complicated history with how Scripture was taught, the ordinary pull of a tired and distracted mind — any of these can quietly erode the habit of regular Bible reading until weeks have passed and the distance from God's Word feels both familiar and vaguely guilty. The honest acknowledgment that we are not always naturally eager to open the Bible is not a sign of weak faith. It is a sign that faith is a commitment, not just a feeling.

Psalm 1 paints a picture of someone whose delight is in the law of the Lord and who meditates on it day and night — and the result is a life that is like a tree planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in season and never withering. That kind of rootedness does not happen accidentally. It is the fruit of a sustained, intentional commitment to staying in the Word even when it does not feel compelling. One practical strategy that has proven remarkably effective for getting out of a Bible-reading funk is finding someone whose spiritual wellbeing matters deeply to you and committing to read Scripture with or to them once a day. Finding someone to read Scripture with creates accountability that good intentions cannot. When someone else's spiritual well-being is connected to our commitment, the stakes shift. We show up not just for ourselves but for them.
The goal does not have to be impressive to be effective. One Psalm a day. One short passage. A specific, measurable, realistic commitment practiced consistently will do more for your Bible reading than an ambitious plan that lasts three days.
A Bible-reading funk is not a permanent state — it is a season to push through. The feelings of intimidation, boredom, or distance from God's Word are real, but they are not reliable guides for whether we should open the Bible. The Word itself is what revives those feelings over time.

Lord, in our sinful flesh it is so easy to shrug off Your Word, to dismiss its beauty, power, and freedom. Whether it is a busy season, a challenging circumstance, or the enemy's distractions, we too easily place Bible reading on the back burner. Please grant us the discernment to find someone we can read Your truth with, and may this commitment to Scripture revive our hearts and awaken a new desire to stay tethered to who You are through the pages of the Bible.
