A Prayer for Your Adult Children this Holiday Season

Most of us move through the world on autopilot — not because we are incapable of noticing, but because we have stopped choosing to. We walk past the bee covered in pollen, the walking stick on a wooden bench, the osprey motionless in a tree above the path we almost took in the other direction. We are present in body but absent in attention, and in that absence, we miss the evidence of God's glory that Psalm 19 declares the heavens themselves cannot stop proclaiming.

Becoming a noticer is not a personality trait reserved for the naturally observant. It is a decision — a deliberate, intentional slowing down to see what has always been there, waiting to be seen. A bee on a flower. The intricate architecture of a dandelion seed head before it is blown apart. The line of sight of a hawk fixed on something in the creek below. These are not small things. They are windows into the character of a Creator who designed every detail with intention and care, and who placed us in the middle of His creation to experience it fully rather than sleepwalk through it. Noticing is gratitude in action. It is a form of worship that requires no special equipment — only the willingness to slow down, engage the senses, and look at the same old thing with new eyes. A life lived with that kind of attentiveness is a life drawn consistently and almost involuntarily closer to God, because every genuine encounter with His creation points back to Him.

Ponder Today
The whole earth is full of God's glory — but we have to choose to notice it. Creation does not stop declaring His majesty when we are not paying attention. We simply miss what was always there, waiting for eyes that are willing to slow down and see.
A life of noticing is a life of gratitude in action. Observing the world around us with intentionality and wonder is not a hobby for the naturally curious. It is a spiritual practice available to every believer who chooses to engage it.
Autopilot is the enemy of abundance. Christ came to give life abundantly (John 10:10), and abundant life is lived in the present tense — participating, observing, engaging. Sleepwalking through creation is a kind of apathy that robs us of what God has placed before us.
Noticing sharpens more than observation — it sharpens the soul. Every genuine encounter with the details of creation is an encounter with the Creator who designed those details. The more we notice, the closer we are drawn to Him.
Look at the same old thing with new eyes. A dandelion puff ball, a patch of sunlight on the floor, birdsong on the way to the car — these are not interruptions to the important things. They are the important things, if we have eyes to see them.

A Prayer for You Today

God of Creation, we join with the chorus in heaven and cry, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory." We are grateful for Your majesty all around us. May we have eyes to see and ears to hear. Our hearts are full of awe. May we increasingly notice the gifts of creation around us as we traverse this life of abundance You have blessed us with. With grateful hearts we pray, Amen.

A Prayer for Noticing More

A seventeen-year-old in a dorm room, alone for the first time, with a rule she had made for herself: no calling home before Friday. She would prove she could do this. So she sat in the silence and counted the days, and she told herself the counting was strength. It wasn't. It was Egypt.

Isaiah 30 tells the story of Judah facing a threat, with God's instruction already clearly given: return, rest, be quiet, and trust. Instead, they went to Egypt for horses and chariots — something tangible, something with hooves and wheels, something that felt like doing rather than waiting. And then comes verse eighteen, one of the most stunning hinges in all of Scripture. After all the refusing, after all the running toward their own solutions, God does not withdraw. "Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you." That word "yet" carries the weight of everything that came before it — and then overrides it entirely. He is not a God who goes quiet and walks away. The Hebrew behind "longs" carries the sense of waiting with intent, waiting the way you wait while watching the driveway for someone you love to come home. He is in anticipation. He is not withholding. He is waiting. And some of the silence we blame on God is silence we are keeping ourselves. We have decided there is a Friday night we have not yet earned our way to, a threshold of worthiness we have to cross before we can come to Him. He is not waiting for us to be worth answering. He is just waiting for us.

A silent room is not an empty room. God's silence is not His absence. Presence and sound are not the same thing. He can be fully, actively present in a season where nothing feels like it is being said.
Some of the silence we blame on God is silence we are keeping. We set rules for when we are allowed to come to Him, and we call those rules strength. But refusing to reach for Him until we have proven something is not faithfulness — it is Egypt.
God does not withdraw when we go our own way — He waits. The "yet" in Isaiah 30:18 is one of the most stunning words in Scripture. After all the refusing, all the running toward human solutions, God still longs to be gracious. He rises up to show compassion. He does not go looking for someone more obedient.
He is not waiting for you to be worth answering. The longing described in Isaiah 30:18 carries the sense of waiting with intent, watching the driveway, in anticipation. He is not waiting for you to earn your way to Friday. He is waiting for you — right now, today, as you are.
Silence gets easier not when it gets quieter, but when we stop thinking silence means absence. The new rhythms come. The counting stops. But it begins with picking up the phone whenever we need to, rather than waiting for a threshold we invented ourselves.

A Prayer for You Today

Heavenly Father, I am sitting in the quiet today, and it is loud. You know how many times I have checked to see if You have said anything and come away with nothing I could hear. Lord, I confess that some of this silence is mine. I have been proving something. I have been going to Egypt for horses when You told me to rest. I made up a rule about when I was allowed to come to You, and then I called the rule strength. But You say You long to be gracious to me — not when I have earned it, but every single day. Help me stop confusing presence with sound. Help me sit in this room and believe You are here even when nothing in it says so. You have been waiting for me this whole time. I surrender myself to You today. In Jesus' name, Amen.

A Prayer Because the Silence Is the Hardest Part

Scrolling through social media on a day that already feels heavy is one of the fastest ways to make a hard day harder. A friend's vacation photos, another's daughter's list of achievements, before-and-after weight loss pictures — and within minutes, the comparison game is in full swing. The problem is that every time we play, we lose. Every single time. Comparison leaves us bankrupt, and we rarely count the cost before we begin.

Comparison is not a new problem. It started in the Garden of Eden when Eve weighed what God had said against what the serpent was offering and decided to trade what she had for something that looked better. The same lie that powered that original comparison still circulates today: you are not enough, you do not have enough, someone else has what you should have. At its core, comparison is a heart issue rooted in fear — fear of inadequacy, fear of missing out, fear that others are more valued or more favored. And it costs us more than just a bad mood. It warps our identity, steals our sense of destiny, and causes us to miss the doors God is opening right in front of us while we are staring out the window at someone else's life. Galatians 6:4 offers a profoundly liberating alternative: test your own actions and take pride in your own progress, without measuring yourself against anyone else. Compare today's growth to yesterday's, not someone else's highlight reel. There is only one way to truly live — the way God made you — and that is more than enough.

What someone else has was never meant for you. God has a specific plan for your life that cannot be fulfilled by pursuing someone else's path or chasing someone else's validation. Trading your destiny for what another person has will never take you where you need to go.
Comparison causes us to miss the doors God is opening in front of us. When our eyes are fixed on someone else's life, we fail to notice the opportunities and invitations that are already right in front of us, waiting for our attention.
Compare today's growth to yesterday's, not to someone else's highlight reel. The question is not whether you measure up to another person. It is whether you are improving, growing, and becoming more of who God created you to be.

A Prayer for You Today

Heavenly Father, we renounce all comparisons and lay down the need to judge ourselves against others. Comparison is not of You. We thank You for making us fearfully and wonderfully — You do not make mistakes, and our individual qualities and quirks are specially designed by You, our Master Creator. May we learn to embrace who You created us to be and remind ourselves each day of what You say about us. In Your great name, Amen.
