The Oscar nominees were announced, and we have some thoughts. Jason and Rosie discuss AI use in The Brutalist and Emilia Perez, plus the snubbing of Nicole Kidman and Denzel Washington. They also ponder whether or not Ryan Gosling will join the Star Wars Universe, Robert Eggers dual movie announcements, and those Marvel Rivals leaks.
Hello.
On today's episode, there's not gonna be any spoilers. We're just talking about news the Oscars, Star Wars, various pieces of things that will be of interest to you and as of interest to us.
Uh So, stay tuned.
Hello, my name is Jasconception and on Wesday Night, and welcome back to the.
Xt revision of the podcast where we dive the video babagees. We're coming you from our podcast.
We were bringing in three episodes a week every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
In today's previously on episode, we're just probably coming out on none of those days. It is actually coming out on Saturday. We are catching up on the biggest geek news of the week. Brian Gosling might join the Star Wars unibus? Is it true? Is it true? X Men characters leek for Marvel arrivals.
That's but first news, First up. The Oscar nominees have been released and there are some surprises there.
Let's start with first surprise.
Denzel Washington snubbed for Best Supporting Gladiator Too.
Nicole Kipman snubbed the Baby Guard snub. I love that movie too, you know what?
And those are two snubs that don't they don't get in my they they're not stuck in my CROs.
Is that famous famous actors.
Who they're famous, famous people who have been lauded and will be fine. And the movies were like okay, and though they were clearly the best part of their movies. Next up, Cynthia Arrivo, she could got.
Yeah, she's pretty feels pretty likely.
It feels like a lock.
So she did win the Tony twenty sixteen Tony Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Lee in The Color Purple. She did win an Emmy. Now it's a Daytime Emmy. How do we feel?
Does it count?
I think I think it counts, but I would like the idea that then it becomes like a it's like a dead go. It's like the Daytime like.
You put like a lowercase D and then and then the rest of the egt is it off her case?
So Daytime Emmy for her performance on.
The Daytime program Today, The Today Show, also related to The Color Purple. She won a Grammy also for The Color Purple Best Soundtrack Musical Theater Soundtrack twenty seventeen Grammys. It counts and here she is with her Oscar nomination for Wicked. Let me ask you this, Rosie, which of the awards do you think is the easiest and which one is the hardest?
From an ego, From.
An egot perspective, which is the easiest?
Which is I think that the hardest is a Grammy because if you can't sing, you can't sing. If you can't do it, you just can't do it. Like the color the music best musical with the album, you do feel like is that a little bit of like is that a cheat? It's not specifically you, but actually no, you have to get into a musical that it's good enough to have a full cast recording, aka, you need to be talented. I think Grammy is hardest. I'm saying Emmy is easiest only because she won it for singing a song on the Today.
Show, because I haven't, honestly, because the fact that I have one lets you know that it's easiest.
There's several you.
Know, there's daytime, there's sports, there's a lot of easy you are Here's.
Why I say closer to an ego though, Jason.
That's right here. Here is my hot take. Here is my second easiest. I think the Oscar is pretty.
Well if you sorically the kind of rolls of one an Oscar. I would agree, especially so recently there's been a trend for like a Best Supporting Actor that's.
Only seemed like a little but you're thinking it's you're still thinking hard version thinking. I think, I think, Oscar, you can sneak in on a technical or short in the back door, one of the technicals or one of the shorts, as a producer, as a direct, like as a team, not necessarily even the person.
I think you can say, I like that. So with the US, you're gonna get your Oscar for your ego from doing like hair and makeup. You're gonna thud like.
Or like producing being like a producer on something I didn't even do anything.
You just got some money. I think, Yeah, I.
Think you can sneak in there. But I agree with you. Grammy is like, that's the hardest.
You can't fake it.
Yeah, you can't freak it.
Other surprise news in what feels like a green Book situation, Amelia Prez leading with thirteen nominations.
Now, yes, definitely taking the green Books.
Law particular example is coming to mind right now, But there are there have been many times in which some particular feature has led with nominations and hasn't gotten like Stoned but didn't but one one of the you know, one like Best Adapted or something like, did not come through, so we'll see.
I feel like last year as well. There's definitely been times when like a movie, a big a movie has been nominated a lot. I think like Steven Spielkes The Fableman's was probably no. I think that was one of the ones that was nominated a lot that didn't win. So you know, I'm hoping this doesn't win anything, even though you know, I am very disappointed specifically in this movie because the director many years ago made an absolutely incredible French crime film called a Prophet, and it is absolutely one of the best, most interesting, complex, thoughtful portrayals of people in prison, of the idea of like what is crime? How do people survive? And I just think it's such a sad route for him to go, to make such a thoughtless movie that many of my trans friends and trans loved ones say is absolute trash. So I'm hoping no nominate, no wins. Familia Perez. I don't want to see it, I don't want to hear it. I don't want to win in any Best Song situation, the fact that it won Best Musical at the Golden Globes. Have you heard the music? It's no wicked, guys, as the Wicked Lover. Wicked did get surprise ten nominations, though I was not expecting it tied.
With Is a Brutalist, the four hour long historical biopic. Yeah, and it's a weird It has been a weird year in movies, as many have noted, and it's everybody's thinking, we'll see where this goes.
This could go anywhere.
Oh, actually we should also mention huge moment here is Demi More getting her first ever Oscar nomination for the Substance Best Leading Role. Big snub Margaret Quali, who plays a very important role in that movie if you haven't seen it, She was not nominated for Best Supporting, but the movie was nominated for Best Picture, and Cora Lee faire Ja, the director, was nominated for Best Director. Very very rare for such an outrageous horror movie to come even close to that Like that is a very gory, very wild, very kind of old school B movie, visual horror movie that is not more aligned with the horror movies that usually get recognized, like Silence of the Lambs is the biggest horror movie we've ever had get out obviously more akin to that kind of elevated idea of horror that people have. I'm not saying elevated horror. I'm saying elevated idea of horror that is accept to the Oscars. It didn't win enough in my opinion, but yeah, interesting to see that big horror movie kind of come. I think, Jason, I think we can take this as that we were right, because I do think that once the mean More gave that speech, I think so at the Golden Globe, she was an absolute lock for this, and I do think she is now the biggest competition for Cynthia.
It felt like an Oscar speech. I feel like she's the front runner. Next up Ai Boo. It's doing stuff. It's doing stuff. In Award movies, The Brutalist and Amelia Perez have both, you know, various people with the productions have admitted that they used AI both to enhance the accents.
Of their characters.
Amelia Perez in Spanish, the Brutalists in Hungarian and what we think about this brutal structer Brady Corbett has said. Brady Korbett has said, quote Adrian and Felicity Adrian Brody and Felicity Jones. Adrian and Felicity's performances are completely their own. They work with They work for months with dialect coach to Nara Marshall, to their accents. Innovative respeech or technology was used in Hungarian language dialogue editing only specifically to refine certain vowels and letters for accuracy.
No English language was changed.
Well isn't the movie for best editing, which I think is really funny as well.
This was a manual process done by our sound team and respeecher in post production. The aim was to preserve the authenticity of Adrian Felicity's performance is another language, not to replace Our all to them and done with almost utmost respect for their craft.
Now listen bully for them.
I haven't seen the movie, although everyone who I know who has seen it it's four hours long, has Despite the four hours, they were blown away. It's amazing obviously that this should be taken into account when you're thinking about awards.
Now do I care?
It's a It's an interesting question because they're here, you're here as a creator as a movie maker, to make a great movie, to make a great piece of art. The awards stuff is secondary to me. Obviously it should be. You should consider that AI was used to ref I don't care what they say here, all this gobblaigoogy used it to make the performances better, right, that's what you did. Do I care as in terms of the piece of art? No, do I care for awards? Yes, I think that it should be thought of.
Also, I do think that specifically in the case of the Brute List, they are using the fact that they obviously use the voice AI whatever stuff, they did that much more because actually they also use generative AI for the r that was at the end of the movie, And that to me.
Is what they say manual p.
Yeah, well they say they use generative AI for a sequence at the end of the film as part of the inspiration for a series of architectural drawings and finished buildings supposedly designed by Brodie's character, the fictional architect laslow Top. But I'm like, guys, just hire a production designer to do that. You don't need to inspire you, just just somebody who's in production can look at some art and some old building blueprints and draw it. Also, I just want to say, you know what, I recently found out in the joom pod chat that Brady Koorbert, the director of this movie, is from one of my favorite remakes of all time, the Larson Trier remake of his own movie Funny Games. And I absolutely love that movie. That American version of it is very fantastic. It's not Larson Trier, it's Michael Hannake, thank you. I just my own brain messing me about that movie is so grim, sober. And I found out that Brady Korbut is the non Michael Pitt character from that movie. I'm disappointed in you, Bro, I'm glad that you went this far. It's okay. But I do think in but too, Oscar Winnez, I think it's okay.
I think here's the thing. Don't get outed, come out and say we used it. Don't let us find out.
You used it.
Be honest from the jump.
Be honest from jump, and we're in a different situation.
You know.
Again, I don't care for the movie per se. I do think for awards, you need to think about it. Yeah, the AI in Amelia Perez was used to tweak the singing was to hance the singing voice of Carla Sophia Gascon. It was apparently necessary, the film's mixer, Cyril Holt said, to increase the range of Gascon's vocal register, and that the production utilized respeechure to blend their singing with that of French pop star Camille, who wrote the film score. Essentially, Carla didn't have the vocal range to do the do the performance, and.
So these ai.
I think this clearly feels like a more extensive use of a high But I think again, in terms of the movie, this is a movie I don't like, But in terms of using it to enhance a performance in a movie, do I care? No, I want a good movie. Do I care when you're going up for awards?
Yes?
Obviously I think that this should be. This is a thing that should be.
And both of these were things that other people call and other people found it out, and I think you're right need to just come out and say, especially with the Brutalist, which for so long people were like, how did you make a movie like this for ten million dollars? How did you save all this money? How did you do this incredible thing? And you've got to say well, part of it was AI because that is a conversation and we're going to be having these conversations for more and more. And also it is you know, I think it's right for people to be like upset, alarmed, not care whatever your feeling is about it, because this has become the norm in Hollywood so quickly. You know, a couple a year ago, me and you were just talking about like, are people gonna use AI, Like what's it gonna look like? And now we're in a situation where two of the biggest oscar contenders have used it, So I think you're right. It's the same with that David Dustmalchen movie Night with the Devil, which people loved, but at the same time is like he didn't you know, they didn't announce that they used AI for some of the interstitials, and then when people found it out, they were more upset than I think if you'd have just said, hey, we are gonna use AI for this, and somebody would have probably said, I can draw that for you, don't worry, but you know what it is?
What it is.
Listen.
One of the one of the things around the Brutalists that folks are talking about all my friends who have seen it are like, man, how do they do this for ten million? It looks incredible. Here's one of the ways. Obviously, you film in Budapest in places where it's super super super super cheap to do it. In other ways is he use AI to generate other things that you would have had technical people help people, your doctors with or in the back end with. So yeah, to be continued, next up, Star Wars, Here it comes. Sean Levy has been developing his Star Wars feature since twenty twenty two, and according to Vulture, it's gonna be in it.
Ryan Gosling attached.
Uh huh. Apparently. The very interesting thing about this is this has kind of been floating around in Hollywood for those last couple of years, and it's been unclear whether that would be Levy's next project. He obviously most recently directed and worked on Depor Versus Wolverine with Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, and had allegedly, interestingly in pouring around this, been working on a boy band comedy movie that would have starred the two of them that was meant to be his next project, but apparently, once Ryan Gosling started snipping around and was like, Hey, I'm gonna be I'm the Gods. I'm I'm here. I'm ken Like. He was like, I'm gonna be here. I want to be in your style movie. This is the one for me. Allegedly not connected to the Skywalker saga. Hollywood Reporter claims it is meant to be a standalone movie, and apparently that got the heads at Disney being like, we haven't put out a movie for a long time, and we're gonna put Ryan Gosling in this movie, and you're gonna make this movie. I would like to see it. I like Ryan Gosling.
I would like to see it. I would like to see a Star Wars movie.
I would hear it. How long has it been said since the Rise of Skywalker? That's the last seven years? Seven years.
I'm guessing. I'm like guessing.
Just I mean, it really feels like it's been a long time.
Well, we'll be back after a very short time, and this word from our spots, and we're back. Next up in news, Robert Eggers of The Northmen, of various other movies, of the recent Nosferatu.
Which was a very big hit.
He saw Lee Wanald's The Wolfman and said, now, let me make a wolf man.
Right, He's making a movie Fields.
It's gonna be called were Wolf, and it will be set in the thirteenth century, and it's gonna be spelt were wolf w e r e w u lf because he's extra and he loves to set a movie well the time that was only white people. That's like he loves to say that. He will say this is which is not true, Like it's not true, like vikings were actually very diverse. I've talked about this before north Man. But yeah, anyway, so that's a Robert Eggers one bit of news. But there's a Robert Eggers double headed hair for those who love Robert Eggers, and that is that at TriStar Eggers has been greenlit to direct Elabyrinth sequel. I don't know how I feel about that. I'm a Jim Henson superstan. I love the original Labyrinth, but I do feel like Afta Nosferatu made young people all over the world twenty. He's probably a good pick because Labyrinth is a very horny movie.
I will say, so sequel. Does this mean Jennifer Connelly is in the sequel. She comes back and like her.
Daughter saying, is it like a legacy the Labyrinth. Please don't bring David Bowie back by some kind of horrible about one.
Of David Bowie's kids.
He's like, they are the god Duncan Joe movies and get in there and be your dad's I will say, I am Eggers. I like his movies. I do wonder if he has the panache.
Though I don't know if he has the vis the.
Feeling like there's I except for oh my god, why am I blanking on the two Handers house, except for the lighthouse that's got pash, There's not a ton of fun and color in the world of Eggers Lambyard's a very colorful, very fun, very whimsical, fantastical movie with some with some gravitas a lah like a wrinkle in time that kind of like ominous but for kids.
Feeling.
Yeah, I do wonder if what it will look like, just because you know, based on his oove, I've I don't think I've seen anything that really comports with the feeling of the Jim Henson classic.
But I'll be there.
Yeah, I'll watch you. I'm also interested because one of our super producers popped in this quote, which is him saying the idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill. Eggs told Rotten Tomorrows when I asked if he would make a contemporary movie, and the idea of photographing a cell phone is death. And to make a contemporary story, you have to photograph a cell phone. It's just how life is. So no, he will never make a contemporary movie, that's what he says. Okay, that's fine. When is the sequel to Laborn?
I don't hate it.
I don't hate it, like I get it. I get that. That's his reasoning when people are critiquing him about when he sets his movies. But how do you do a sequel to Labyrinth?
Then?
Is it directly just set still in the eighties, like it's the next day? Like I'm intrigue Gode in that case, I am.
I am intrigude about you know a guy who uses like a Sony red Dragon six K camera and all the various lighting rigs to film stuff from two hundred years ago. And it's very interesting to me that the mindset. But I will be there next up Marvel Rivals news, more characters are coming. First of all, Nettie's has said that they're gonna drop a new character about every month and a half. That's what they're gonna do, which, considering the the depth of Marvel's stable of characters, that means new content for approximately two hundred and seventy five years.
But so the latest leaks according.
To xox Leak, so your mileage may vary, are that the next six heroes to appear or you know sometime in the future are Gambit x Men's Gambit who will be a duelist that makes sense, Rogue who will be a strategist, Metched aka a healer. I love a flying healer. We don't have what except for Rocket, we don't have one of those yet. I think Ultron will be the first flying healer.
Jubilee unknown.
What's your guests?
Hopefully?
I think we need more strategists, we need more vanguards. Really, I think it's I've heard that the tank character, the vanguard character.
Is the least popular to be.
Played, but also like very important. Magneto has become very important recently.
Beast.
I'm gonna guess like some kind of like highly mobile vanguard.
I can't say it feels like a vanguard like a tank, but you can jump around.
Yeah, Nightcrawler is a duellist, which would be super fun like that, and the Hood Shocker the Hood what as a vanguard That.
Rby Williams show is coming out and you are gonna know who the Hood is.
That's very that's very very true. But I've seen the other leaks have included like.
The Trapster aka paste Pot Pete, the fact that they're going deep.
They are definitely going like really deep, really deep.
They go like paste Pot Pete aka the Trapster for those of you not in the know, is a character who has like two glue guns yea and just glues people to stuff.
Yeah, so very excited. It's a game.
I'm playing a lot to deal with stress, which is not healthy. But like I've been playing a lot, so I'm excited to know what got to be done.
I'm excited to I'm excited to play it. That's it for News this week.
