Guest: Dr. Paul Stanislaw-Facial Plastic Surgeon and Skin Cancer Expert.
Subject:  Protecting Skin from the Sun. Dr. Stanislaw says   ultra violet or UV  rays  result in visible  signs on the skin , including  dark spots  and wrinkles. UV radiation penetrates deeper into the skin, reaching the dermis where collagen, the structural scaffolding of the skin is located. This causes the skin to sag in place, creating wrinkles. He says reducing sun exposure is key. Dr. Stanislaw says damage at the cellular level can also lead to skin cancer. He says sunscreens, hats and sunglasses should be worn consistently. He says children less than 6 months old should be protected by avoiding sun exposure all together or be covered by clothing. Dr. Stanislaw says it is critical to apply sunscreen of at least 9 percent zinc. In addition, he says lips, also need to be protected. Dr. Stanislaw says look for waterproof sunscreens with a waterproof rating. typically, 40 to 80 minutes until it needs to be reapplied
