In this episode of “Tech vs Media,” Max Child, co-founder of Volley, breaks down the growing technology of voice control and explains why the industry went wrong in coupling voice control with “imaginary humans” like Siri. While Siri on the iPhone encourages users to ask follow-up questions that the AI is not programmed to answer, Child sees Siri on Apple TV as a “better experience,” because the format limits users’ expectations of the AI to only controlling volume and programming — similar to Alexa’s function with playing music. Child also explains why he sees adopting voice control is an intuitive move for tech and predicts virtually every device will have voice control capabilities in five to 10 years.
