Young Game-Changers: Working Relationships With Young People - Paul D. Lowe & Paul Kelly

View descriptionShare

On this episode of the World Game Changers podcast Paul D. Lowe is joined by a previous guest, Paul Kelly, who joins to talk about how the pandemic has affected his drive to follow his dreams and whether people put up barriers to how they really feel and if they’re not OK.

He has been teaching college students remotely throughout the last year and has seen the way some of them have been struggling throughout the pandemic and has had to identify their needs, communicate to understand their needs and refer them to the right help system.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Why say what you’re not when you know you’re not happy, or well, or coping? It’s better to be honest and seek the help that you need.
  • People are too quick to hide their feelings, but the pandemic has allowed people to find out about themselves what they want and don’t want from their lives.
  • You can have different relationships with different people in different ways, but all relationships are about forming a common bond. Sometimes it takes time and you may have to restart the relationship with a better understanding of how to communicate with them.
  • We have a lot of young people struggling with mental health issues that have come about through being locked down and not able to see their friends and relatives. Because of their age they lack the experience of bad times and this will be – for some – the some the last 18 months to 2 years will be the most difficult period they’ve ever experienced.

BEST MOMENTS

‘People say ‘I’m OK’, but really, is that good enough?’

‘Some people ask if you’re OK because they want you to ask them, because actually they aren’t and are reaching out.’

‘You have to look after and love yourself before you can look after someone else.’

‘Be kind. Encourage people, don’t put them down.’

‘Everything is stacked against young people at the moment, I want to make things equal for them and I’ll do whatever it takes.’
