View descriptionShare

On this episode of the World Game-Changers podcast, Paul continues his conversation with James Conroy-Finn about the meaning of life, specifically about being a World Game-Changer & overcoming depression.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • I don’t know that you ever can fully overcome depression. In many ways it’s apart of what we are, a part of our brains & the way we exist & relate to the world around us. Being aware of that & knowing where it comes from & ways you can spend more time in a positive place & developing coping mechanisms. In a way, it’s a bit like addictions. Learning to cope with it & navigate it is something we all can do.
  • Most people can probably think of times when they were happy or sad. If you spend time exploring these emotions; you can bring them back. You can make yourself cry by thinking of a film you’ve watched, like Schindler’s List. Same with happiness, like when I first took my dog – Charlie – to the park & taught him how to do tricks.
  • We should be pursuing knowledge, clarity of thought & mental models of how you can better relate to & understand the world around you, these are worthwhile pursuits. Once you have that foundation you can spend your time on all sorts of novel areas.
  • If you can’t be critical or distance your ego from your ideas & have people challenge you, if you have no understanding of the natural world or spent time looking at things like chemistry, physics and biology – The language of mathematics has a bad rep, but if you speak that language it becomes very easy to understand certain things, like the relationship between components of a system. There’s great value in this as it helps us better communicate & relate to one another. That’s where there’s beauty to be found.

BEST MOMENTS

‘You can choose how you feel & how you respond to the world, but I don’t think we can ever choose not to be human'.

‘Having an adversarial relationship with yourself is never going to be productive'.

You’re not defined by every idea that pops into your head'.

‘When people try to inhibit others it only holds us all back'.
