Paul is joined on today’s episode by Personal Trainer, John Batterby, to discuss the concept of “dropping the mask”. John spent his youth and formative years in the Royal Navy, an experience that taught him about people’s perceptions of himself and others.

Often we create a mask so as to fit in; or because others expect it of us, but as John and Paul discuss, sometimes it can be difficult to drop that mask when it’s no longer needed.

John Batterby was the youngest serviceman - at 16 - to serve in the Falklands War. From a very early age, his ambition was to become a serviceman, following in the footsteps of his Grand-father. Joining as a chef in the Royal Navy, John become a clearance bomb disposal diver. He always had the support of his parents and after 25 years in the Royal Navy and leaving as an NCO went to Spain to become a Personal Trainer.

One thing that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – something he is totally aware of.  He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned the iconic ‘Think Different’ Apple commercial narrated by Steve Jobs in 1977:

“Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules.  You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do!”
