As a teacher, it has become increasingly apparent to PK that, since the start of the academic year in September 2021,  young people’s mental health has been severely affected by the global pandemic and the lack of face-to-face education. What does this mean for their future?

There are so many different strands to people’s mental health, and especially in children, that can affect then, that can be triggers, that can disrupt their wellbeing, their mental health and their whole outlook on life.
The COVID-19 situation has made people scared of doing the simplest things like going outside or catching a bus. Anxiety, depression, all these things that were attributed to adulthood are now being shown in 14, 15, 16-year-olds, and that’s very distressing. Older people are much more used to change, younger people like a lot more certainty.
Mental health in children can be exacerbated by parents who have their own mental health issues. A child is then having to be a carer to their parent and they’re not getting the good intentions from their parents, they’re having to deal with depression and the problems with addiction which is putting a massive burden on them that they cannot cope and reach breaking point. They’re then labelled in school as being disruptive or having a problem. They just want to be heard.

ABOUT THE GUEST

Paul’s young parents divorced before he attended primary school, resulting in him and his mother going to stay with his loving grandparents. From starting primary school, Paul was always a keen sportsman, excelling in swimming, football, chess and cricket, and establishing himself as a regular in the Nottinghamshire (UK) cricket set-up. His grandmother decided to give Paul the opportunity to go to a private school to play his beloved sport; something he continued in Australi.

On his return to England, Paul was attacked after a night out and hospitalised, suffering temporary blindness, a double fractured skull and memory loss. After 1 days in a coma, he awoke and started to rebuild his life: but encountering severe depression, suicidal thoughts, paranoia and heavy drinking binges.
