Inter-Cultural Relationships (Part One) – Bob Conlin & Rubria Mendoza

View descriptionShare

On this episode guest host Bob Conlin presents another of his relationship episodes, this time he has a guest, Rubria Mendoza, for the first of a two-part episode on cultural relationships. For example, what are some of the challenges and benefits of being in a relationship with someone from a different culture.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • I was born in Mexico but moved to the US when I married an American. It’s been a great journey, but those first years were tough. It’s really important to keep honest with ourselves and not force the other person to embrace our culture and traditions, but to make them part of it.
  • In my family, we have specific traditions. We’re a big family and we love gathering, we love to hug people, to be close to them, sleep next to them, touch a lot while we are talking, etc. A lot of my husband’s family don’t like big reunions or any of these things. I started to restrict myself and change to fit them, but it created a big issue because I was not happy. Eventually, we both said what we were and weren’t comfortable doing and we both said we’d do certain things but not others – it doesn’t mean I don’t like your friends or love you family, but I’ll keep my distance or I’ll join in, but we shouldn’t force each other.
  • My culture has a tendency to please people, for example giving the choice of pizza and pasta for dinner and I want pasta but he says pizza and I have pizza even though I don’t want it. Communication is so important, my husband used to communicate in a short way which made me feel like he was upset, but it was just the way he communicates where I like to know why it’s a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’ and go into detail.

BEST MOMENTS

‘When you start a relationship with someone that comes from a completely different background and culture, the key for me is not to lose your own identity to please the other person.’

‘Every marriage has ups and downs, and I learned this the hard way! But I’m glad I did that because now, I’m hoping our kids see that there’s a different way to do it and it will bring joy and benefits to their lives and futures in terms of relationships.’

‘Communication is a challenge for any relationship, but inter-culturally it’s a little bit more.’

‘It’s been a great opportunity for me to learn what I’m capable of doing in terms of learning how to live with someone and say things in a different way that mean the same.’
