A Question of Awareness
In this episode of the Mastering Life Podcast, Paul chats with Derek Jackson, a qualified mental health nurse about the importance of awareness, especially for those who want to change the course of their lives for the better.; to help understand your purpose and how you will travel a path where there will be not just opportunities, but also challenges
Derek also shares how the nursing profession can be a vocation for those people who want to help others. Derek has a passion for caring for people and has spent 46 years doing so with the NHS.
Paul and Derek emphasise that being vulnerable and reaching out to someone, may it be formal or informal, is never a sign of weakness. One can never learn and do stuff on their own. It pays to be receptive of your loved one’s advice and be observant of other people. Another thing they highlight, is people should stop using labels on themselves, their aspirations, and their end goals. Discover the reason behind it when you tune-in.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Derek: I don’t think it was evident. I just thought I was the sort of person who’d want to help people. I look back in my childhood, I look back in my school years, I think I had it in me, but it became more developed when I went through my nursing career… I came from a caring family… we were encouraged by [my parents] to help people even at the very basic level

ABOUT THE HOST
Something that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – for which he is immensely proud. He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned – in the Steve Jobs quote:
“Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
