Values & Rules: Insights With John Batterby

View descriptionShare

In today’s episode of the Mastering Life Podcast, Paul discusses values and rules and shares his own experience of almost joining the Royal Marines; fulfilling his sense of purpose to serve and protect. Paul describes his inspiring - yet self-destructive - journey; as well as his confusion around his own identity.

For Paul’s, all-or-nothing mindset, words were simply not enough as he chased his unreachable value of love.

Paul interviews John Batterby, as they compare their own values and goals; whilst aiming for the same goal (love), their outcomes were completely different.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Due to Paul’s precarious upbringing, he craved the reassurance of love, simply being told he was loved, was not enough

How do your values influence your life?

  1. Think of a positive value to move towards
  2. Think of a negative moving away value
  3. Ask yourself, is there any conflict here, if not continue to focus on what you want
  4. Become aware of your rules around achieving your values
  5. Is this rule, making your value easy or hard to attain?
  6. If it makes it hard, you have the awareness to simply change your rule

BEST MOMENTS

“I wanted to fight for others, those that couldn’t fight for themselves, rationalizing this is the legacy of my early unjust challenges. In my mind, the Royal Marines was the perfect answer and I was given the opportunity to join.”

“At heart, I was a naturally a caring and sensitive person.  This fitted well in the true warrior inside of myself”

“I was living a black and white polarizing existence, with darkness becoming ever more frequent.

ABOUT THE HOST

Something that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – for which he is immensely proud.  He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned – in the Steve Jobs quote:

“Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
