Welcome to Womanity Women in Unity, this episode reflects on equality for women through perspectives of past gains, present actions and future intent from guests that have participated in the program this year. Prof Julie Wells (Head of the Isikhumbuzo Applied History Unit at Rhodes University) highlights some of the resistance movements over the last 100 years that emphasise women’s unwavering dedication to the liberation struggle. Legislation has changed the face of women’s rights for the better of womenkind. High Court Judge Thoba Poyo-Dlwati from the KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court shares some local examples, such as the Constitutional Court making it possible for women to be appointed as chiefs. High Court Judge Tebogo Djaje from the North West Division of the High Court explains the importance of implementing policies to drive change, and the need for women to develop confidence be hopeful and optimistic that they are capable of achieving their goals. Lastly, Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Hlengiwe-Mkhize discusses some of the actions government is undertaking to tackle current issues to drive gender equality.
