In the moment I was scared, but right now, I’m grateful for what happened because it put everything into perspective, you wouldn’t believe how much stuff I don’t care about anymore, like being late or your child getting a bad grade, I really know now what’s important and what’s not. 
My doctor said my reflexes in the knee would never come back, but it came back with a vengeance, everything came back. I got so fit that I really didn’t have the mindset of a sick person. You could call it denial, but I really just wanted to live my life.
I kept training and lifting and did some fun stuff I’d never dared to do before, like mud racing. I was in my 50s and I would never have dared to do these things when I was in my 30s, I was having a hell of a time! My personal trainer suggested I try Olympic weightlifting which I remembered watching on TV as a girl, and I loved it right away because it’s a mix of skill and strength and it’s explosive.
I’m convinced that becoming muscular saved my life and my health helped me to get out of this illness. When I work with clients everything gets better in their life when they get stronger. Science has been catching up really quickly over the last few years, we know now that muscle mass and muscular health is responsible for metabolic health (blood sugar management), functional independence – which helps you to have more fun and a more fulfilling life, and improved mental health.
