• You want to make sure you like the clients that you work with because if you do it’s always a much nicer, easier working environment and you’ll go the extra mile for them. If you don’t like them, you dread them calling you, you dread picking up the phone, you dread speaking to them, everything about them. There are certain personality types that don’t gel; the people who go through agency after agency because they’re looking for the one that’s right for them where the reality is they’re the problem. I’ve learned to spot this early on, but I still get the feeling that I shouldn’t turn a client away because it’s business and they might lead to someone else, or they might not be as bad as I think. But, 99 times out of 100 they are!
• You need to leave on good terms and make it clear that you’re not the right fit for each other and you both clearly have different paths/journeys to take. Recommend someone that could potentially help them with their journey and where they want to go so that you can go and work with people that aren’t dickheads.
• The biggest thing I’ve done in business, and what a lot of people strive to do but don’t quite succeed at, is not going into business and give yourself a job. I run a digital marketing agency, I’d don’t design and build websites, do the SEO, send the email marketing campaigns myself anymore, all of that is done by other people. My job now is talking on podcasts, speaking on stages, networking with people, and doing the kind of stuff that drives leads into the business. You need to hire the right people to do that.
• You need to hold onto the people that are good, give them the opportunities they want for growth, that they want to do more ‘cool stuff’ rather than just the technician parts. You need to let other people grow as well, you need to let them make their own decisions and empower them so that when problems or opportunities come into the business they can make those decisions themselves rather than keep coming to you to ask what they should do.
