Since 1958, the La Crescent Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism has been helping member businesses; professionals and individuals stay informed and connected. Their mission is to strengthen and promote members by building community alliances and working as business advocates. Their goal is making La Crescent an even greater place to visit, work and live. John Wilson is the president of the La Crescent Chamber of Commerce board of Directors. He appeared on Lacrosse Talk with Sean Dwyer on Wednesday morning. John began the conversation talking about some of the goals the Chamber has for 2026.

La Crescent Chamber looking to grow from its apple roots

Valentine's Day is this weekend. It's on a Saturday. When the day falls on the weekend, we tend to spend more and take more time to celebrate the day, so says Lightspeed commerce, a digital consulting and research firm.

In 2024, Americans spent $25.8 billion on Valentine's presents. The number one person receiving those gifts were significant others and spouses. Second on the list, other family members and #3 friends. Interesting fact, Americans spend more money on their pets on Valentine's Day than they do on co-workers.

One year which stands out is 2020, the year of the pandemic. That year, Americans went Cupid Crazy when they spent an estimated $27 billion over the holiday. Many of the dollars spent were gifts ordered online and not at retailers or restaurants because of quarantine.

Gen-Zer's have a different approach than other generations to the Valentine's Day. They tend to spend more money on themselves and lean toward beauty and self-care products. Jewelry, candy and flowers are still popular gifts according to "Doo-Finder", a company which tracks E-commerce. 

On Tuesday's La Crosse Talk, two local business owners visited the studio discussing their products. Jonathan Rose from Rose Jewelers in downtown La Crosse and Dave Edwards from the Ranison Candy Shop on the city's Southside joined Sean Dwyer to talk about some sweet treats and golden gift ideas.

What to get for Valentine's Day on La Crosse Talk

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers' Johnson's State of the State address is coming up next week on February 17. 

When La Crosse Talk's Sean Dwyer asked him for a preview of what he's planning to say, the governor provided a succinct reply, "No."

The rest of the interview went a little better. 

Evers spoke about PFAS legislation and trying to get a bill to sign this year along with working on a plan on prescription drug prices. 

He also mentioned discussions with Republicans in the state legislature regarding property tax reform. 

The governor's replies were a bit more scathing when the subject of President Trump's proposal regarding federal takeover of elections, saying the states are doing a "horrible" job of running elections. "That's the dumbest idea I've ever heard," the governor said. He called it an insult to the thousands of people around the state who take pride in running the elections.  He said our system works well. 

Evers talked about what's happening in Minnesota and his contact with Governor Tim Walz. "He's done an amazing job keeping as many people safe as possible. Obviously, we've had a couple of deaths up there that are just horrific. If you think about the purpose of what all this is about and having two people killed as a result of this is just wrong-headed."

He later said, "He's a fighter, he's not going to give. He's someone we need to thank for his good work."

Lastly, the governor reminisces about growing up in his hometown of Plymouth, Wisconsin, the cheese capital of the world.
