They’re attempting the impossible. 

Phillip and Claire Mitchell are trying to, what we’ve been calling, “Fix Rick.”

Now, some WIZM listeners might think, ‘There’s no fixing that liberal.’ But that’s not what’s going on here. 

The two own Mitchell Holistic Health (MHH) in Onalaska and have been working with me for the past few months on various injuries that have kept me from being active, playing sports — getting back into my third space (for those who have listened to other shows).

Claire and Phillip joined WIZM’s La Crosse Talk this week to break down some of the ways they’ve been attempting to “Fix Rick,” for injuries that might plague a lot of people.

We break down some of the ways the Mitchells treat injuries, but I also break some news to them on the show about my disciplined eating plan that fell off the cliff — thanks to an old friend visiting town. It was like telling your parents you wrecked the car.

All of this started for me with a calf that has continuously strained from running, plus nagging shoulder pain from volleyball. Those are just a few of the things that have hampered my ability to move and, being 46 years old is, apparently, not a good excuse for the Mitchells, either.

But the way they diagnose and treat these things at MHH is sort of a three-pronged plan of physical therapy (PT), diet and life coaching (though Claire also mentions for women out there, they're also providing what's called Pelvic Floor PT) 

For me, though, PT is easy to understand, but Phillip has pointed out that the calf injury may be starting in the back and a shoulder injury could be coming from the neck.

And from there it’s about creating a routine that’s manageable given everything else going on in life. So, it’s not an hour’s worth of work in the gym — unless I’m on my phone half the time.

On the other side, over these past few months, what I’ve also learned is that diet — what Claire specializes in and is technically called “functional medicine — plays a giant role in getting the body to recover. Inflammation is a word they use often — not to be confused with swelling that comes from a sprained ankle — and one that hampers recovery simply because of the types of food that does not agree with the body.

Fix Rick continues this week at MHH as I meet with Natalie Jorde, the life coach, and probably disappoint her with more undisciplined slacking from the plan.
