It's tax time once again, and AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is offering free tax preparation for low- and middle-income residents with a focus on low-income seniors. 

There are two locations this year-one in La Crosse and one in Onalaska. They're currently accepting appointments at both locations that begin on February 9.

For people in La Crosse and areas to the south, the site is at the Reach Services and Resource Center at 212 11th St. S. in La Crosse. To schedule an appointment here, you can call 608-588-6124.

For people living in North La Crosse, Onalaska, Holmen, or West Salem, you can visit the site in the Great Rivers United Way building at 1855 E. Main Street in Onalaska. For an appointment time, call 608-501-2544.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide available again in Wisconsin

The 2026 Olympic Games are about to begin. They generate excitement around the world because they highlight, in part, what humans can accomplish. Athletes often go to their physical limit, but what separates the truly elite athletes from the rest? According to Shilagh Mirgain, PhD, a distinguished psychologist at UW-Health, there's a big part of performance which is mental. The psychologist says because these Olympic athletes are competing on a world stage, there's pressure to succeed, but a lot of the effort goes into the physical aspect of the work. Mirgain says it's important, though, to concentrate on mindfulness and the mental aspect of the performance.  She also discusses how we can all learn from those experiences and make them a part of our lives.

The groundbreaking sitcom is a program which transcends generational differences.  It really doesn't matter what your age is, you probably have a story or memory of the TV show. It is 40 years since the comedy first premiered on television.  There's a new book by a UW-La Crosse television historian about the "Golden Girls."  The new release offers fans and scholars a fresh way to explore the enduring impact of the program. "The Golden Girls Tales from Lanai" is Co-edited by UW-L assistant professor of media studies Taylor Cole Miller.  Miller discusses the book on La Crosse Talk with Sean Dwyer. Through 12 original chapters and extensive interviews of producers and writers of the show, the book explores distinct perspectives, drawing from fields such as queerness, feminism, critical black studies and fat-shaming studies. This book is a rare behind the scenes insight into the making and legacy of the series, which still streams and appears as reruns today. Professor Miller had a conversation about his book on La Crosse Talk with Sean Dwyer Wednesday.

UWL professor pens book on the "Golden Girls"

He's traveled the world. He's seen many European countries. He is a Winter Olympian. His name is Ben Loomis and he's from Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Ben is 27 years old. He was named the Nordic Combined Athlete of the Year by the United States Ski and Snowboard Association in 2016. He competed in the 2018 and the 2022 Winter Olympics. But when we talked to Ben Loomis about his most memorable experiences, he brought up his time growing up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Ben joined WIZM 1410 AM on the phone from Austria.  That is where he is preparing and competing as a ski jumper on the U.S.A team.  He is working toward medals as he prepares for this year's Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy. Ben has lots of fun stories to share.  He did that on La Crosse Talk with Sean Dwyer on Wednesday.
