It was a busy week in Australia’s courts. Alex Greenwich won his defamation case against Mark Latham for calling his homosexual sex acts disgusting. Monica Smit won her civil case against Victoria Police for unlawfully arresting her twice but still has to pay their costs of AU$240,000. Moira Deeming defamation case against Victoria Liberal Leader John Pesutto begins this week. Jacob Hersant leader of the National Socialist Network will find out next month if he will be the first Victorian to be found guilty of performing the now-illegal Nazi salute.

The Albanese Government introduced three anti-free speech bills in the Australian Parliament this past week theCommunications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2024, the Criminal Code Amendment (Hate Crimes) Bill 2024 and the Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024. 

However, Pauline Hanson’s Sex Discrimination Amendment (Acknowledging Biological Reality) Bill 2024 to restore definitions of biological sex was voted down at the first reading.
