Heyby, why are all the lights off in the studio? Elliott, don't walk in here if you're barefoot. I'm never barefoot. I'm always in either my waking Oxford's or my sleeping Oxford's. What's going on? Okay? Well? I recreated one of martial arts master and film star Bruce Lee's most famous stunts of kicking out a ceiling lamp, which is rad. But I kicked out our ceiling lamp and it's a dark in the studio and there's glass everywhere. Never fear for I, Much like our other famous figure for today, American Red Cross founder Clara Barton, am always prepared to help should a disaster arise. I have an emergency head lamp with me at all times. Really always prepared. Huh. Well what if I break this table emergency tape okay? Or I unplugged the recording equipment emergency generator, or I punch a hole in the emergency magic high poster held up with the emergency tape to cover the whole, or I, oh, hey, it's a dolphin, Eric quick, Well, he's too distracted to tear the studio apart. Today we're talking about Bruce Lee and Clara Barton, two people who found themselves on opposite sides of a battle, not with each other but in general. But before we get to them. Let's get to know our contestants, all right. First up, we have Ava, Ava. Please introduce yourself. I am Ava and I am Ten. I enjoy um sketching and I like to read a lot of books. And my favorite TV show is definitely the Who Worship. That's so excited to hear. What was your favorite episode of the Who Was? TV? Show? I like the one about Queen Elizabeth and Albert Einstein. Those are pretty funny. Oh nice, Well, that is so exciting, Um that your favorite shows who Was? TV? Show? And now here you are of Who Was? A podcast? Speaking as one of the people who wrote Who Was? TV? Show? You're right, it's a great show. Thank you very much for watching it. That's right, all right, And up next we have Natalie. Natalie please introduce yourself. Hi, Natalie, and I intend and I enjoy sewing. Um, Natalie, are you working on something right now? Is there a sewing project you're working on? Yeah? Actually right now I'm in the middle of like taking old drifted clothing and turning it into something new. Oh my gosh, do you have like an example of that? Like the thing that's coming from my mind is like when people take a bunch of ties and make them into a skirt. Where people take pants and make them into smaller pants. Well, one of my one of the things I've done is taking like some oversized T shirts and taking clothing that I have that I kind of like the shape up and putting it on top of the fabric and sewing it together to re create that except for the different sewing with the different fabric. Comic. Oh cool, that's fantastic, so cool. Well, thank you both so much for sharing. I had a project like that once where I wanted to turn a hat into a bathing suit and it didn't work. So I admire that you seem to know a lot more about sewing than I do. Thank you both of you, Ava and Atlie Thinks so much for being with us today. And thank you to Eric, our musician, for providing that lovely Meet the Contestants music and all the music on the show today today's episode. You guessed it. It's another special matchup because Ava and Natalie have the same teacher. Mr Bruno, that's right. It's a classmate battle to the end. It's just a classmate battle to the end of the battle. Mr Bruno, do you have any words of encouragement for these two shining stars. They're great girls. I know that they're going to do a great job today. They're really, really fantastic kids. I love. Oh that's the great, very sweet. So that's who is. Now let's find out who was Clara Barton with four fast facts fast Clara Barton lived from you one to Her nickname was the Angel of the Battlefield after her field hospital work in the Civil War. She was a teacher and an advocate for public school. She brought the Red Cross to America. Has Now we simply must get on to our first game. It's called hashtag history. Hashtag history, hashtag history, hashtag hashtag. In this multiple choice game, we will read to a comment and a hashtag Clara Barton would have used during her life if there was social media at the time. There wasn't, unfortunately, but if there was, this is what she would have said, and you will choose the best answer to tell us what she was hash in about. And because this is the first game, each question is worth one point. So the first question is for Eva, I wanted to go viral, but this is ridiculous hashtag smallpox, big problems. Is this hashtag about a a young Clara helping the children in her town through a smallpox outbreak. B Clara being told the Red Cross was a virus to democracy. Or see Clara's band compromised a petite women called smallpox, reaching number one with their hit healing time. The best answer to me would probably be A, that's right. The answer is a young Clara, fresh off nursing for brother after a bad fall, helped take care of the children of her town during a smallpox outbreak. She was only about thirteen at the time, but already showing signs of courage and ingenuity, as she would display throughout her life. The next question is for Natalie attention at school House One. Your arithmetic is all wrong. Six hundred dollars divided by two fifty dollars equals I quit hashtag square root of unfair hashtag wage battle. Now was Clara talking of out a her tuition fees for the college she went too being too high? B Wage inequality at the schoolhouse she established. Or see her father telling her battle stories from his military days. I think the answer is B. You got it right. The answer is being Clara created Schoolhouse one, a free school in Boardentown, New Jersey. It was a huge success, but the board hired a male principle and paid him over twice what they offered Clara. She was so disheartened she quit, but the incident didn't deter her from helping others. Okay, the next question is for Eva, take it away, b it's time to sway President Hayes, my way. Let's not be neutral about helping people. Hashtag Swissmas, hashtag say yeah to Geneva? Was she talking about a asking President Hayes to legalize chocolate in America, be trying to get the US to convert to the metric system, or c getting the US to join the first Geneva Convention? That's right. The answer is seeing. It took Clara over a decade and three presidents in office until the United States finally joined the Geneva Convention, a set of humanitarian rules that tells countries that war how to treat captured soldiers and enemy civilians, and pledged to establish the American Red Cross for disaster relief. Good answer. The next question is for Natalie, who can put a price on helping those in need? Money doesn't make a difference. Clara Barton makes a difference. Hashtag budget without boarders, hashtag fallen angel. Was Clara talking about a her critics saying she mismanaged money at the Red Cross b inflation during the Russian Famine of or see the expensive gifts and jewelry heads of state gave her. I think the best answer is probably a. You're right. The answer is A. Clara was criticized for running the Red Cross with an iron rule. It was accused of stealing funds. Many people encouraged her to give up her position, but she didn't resign until nineteen o four after a Senate investigation found her come fleetely innocent. That wasn't the end of Clara's career, but unfortunately it is the end of this game. Hashtag hashtag thank you both. That was a great round that you just played. Incredible. Okay, we're going to have producer Jane tally up the scores and then we'll reveal them to the world right after this short break, Eric, can you play us some first aid music please? What they're out overnight? Welcome back to the Who Was Podcast, where today we're finding out who was Clara Martin and who was Bruce Lee? And now back to your host, Elliott Halin. Thank you be. We just got through an exciting game of hashtag history between our competitors Eva and Natalie. Producer Jane. Can you hashtag tell us the scores? Sure, Ken Elliott, It's all tied up at two fantastic. It's a real close game, the closest a game can get. Everyone has the same score. Let's keep the show going as we find out who was Bruce Lee with four fast facts pas Born in San Francisco in nineteen forty. He split his time between the US and Hong Kong until his death in nine His given name is Lee John Fan. Bruce Lee made martial arts popular in the US. His fastest punches clocked in at a hundred and eighteen miles brour. That's even faster than these facts. Bruce Lee was also known as the Dragon because he was born in the year of the Dragon and also the time of the dragon between six am and eight am. Oh, that's the time of my dragon breath every morning. And I'm glad you don't show up to work until afternoon most days, most days, most days. But I think the Dragon is such a great nickname, and I know I wish I want people to I want people to call me that. I'm wondering for our intestines. Have any cool nicknames? Natalie? Do you have a nickname that anyone calls you? No, not really. I mean sometimes my friends will call me Nat, but that's not really cool. I think it's pretty cool. It's pretty cool. Yeah, and okay, Av Then what do you have a nickname? Yes? Oh, here we go. You know it's gonna be good when they start laughing before before an answer. Well, I was baby, I was called chunky monkey, and then now I'm just monkey. Why all right? Those are both amazing nicknames. Elliott, did you ever have a nickname? The closest I ever had to a nickname was when I would correct people and how to spell my first name, which is spelled with two teas, so people would call me two teas, which is not an amazing nickname. It's just a spelling I did well more than it's more than I should, but it's because of my diet. And what about you, be, I mean, what what you must have an amazing nickname? Yes, some people call me B, which is well, you know, B is a nickname for Beatrice. So I'm just always out here with my nicknames. I thought you were saying that BE the letter was what people called you as a nickname for be the name. Yes, it's shorter, but still the sounds the same. That's true. And I can tell the difference. I know when someone is calling me B, B, E A or B just the letter B, or if they're really if they're really throwing everybody for a lope and call me like the insect B. Yeah, b E. Oh wow, that's there's a lot of meanings to that that word slash letter. Okay, enough about nicknames. I contain multitude ease, yeah, multitudes. Okay, enough about nicknames, enough about tuting. Let's get on and know more about Bruce. Let's get to know more about Bruce Lee in this next game lists of fury. So this is gonna be a timed game for this time game, b will run through a list of statements about Bruce Lee. If the statements are true, you will say Cato, which is the name of Bruce his character from the Green Hornet TV show. If they're false, you'll say no way, like Bruce Lee is fighting technique the way of no Way. And if you don't know the answer, say pass like if you were Bruce Lee and you wanted to catch up, but it was on the other end of the table, and you'd say, please pass me the catchup. That's how Bruce Lee would say that. So if it's true, say kato. If it's not true, saying no way, and if it's you don't know, say pass. We're gonna see how many answers you can get in thirty seconds. And because this is the second game, each question is worth two points, So producer Jane is going to keep score and Elliott will time you. Elliott tell us when you are ready, okay, and begin. Bruce's other nickname was never sits still Pakato. Bruce's dad's name was Big Bruce Pass. Bruce was the Cha Chaw champion of Hong Kong Kato. Bruce's first movie role came when he was just a baby. Pass. Bruce Lee is the brother of directors Bikely No way, Okay, and that's thirty seconds. All right, excellent job, all right, Elliott, tell us window and let us begin. Bruce Lee invented the sport of train surfing. Past his famous one inch punch knocked a man back sixt Kato. Bruce could do push ups with his nose past he was allergic to shirts. No way, great job both of you. Excellent work both of you. Those were some fast lists and you listed very fastly, and you remember just what you were supposed to say for true or false, which I know I would have forgotten. There, that was it. Let's high kick jump over to Jane producer Jane with the scores Madealie is in the lead with eight while Eva has six. Okay, this is so exciting. This game is so incredible. I can hardly contain myself. You see him pretty on edge. I'm fine, Okay, you know what, I might need to take some deep breaths and center myself. Do you mind if I put in a meditation tape? Could you do it later? We have a showed a great so much for understanding. Hello. It is me film star, martial arts champion Total Cuilty and lifelong meditator Bruce Lee. I'm using a s m R, that thing where your scalp goes all tingly from listening to sounds. Personally, I don't get it, but yucking, someone's young. It's not very zen. Anyway, In this meditation, I will use a s m R to deepen your relaxation so you can achieve the highest levels of enlightenment. Maybe then you will come up with profound thoughts like in the middle of chaos lies opportunity or real living is living for others. Or my name is Bruce Lee. Wow, who came up with those super deep thoughts? Oh yeah, it was me, Bruce Lee. I did. But enough of my letter musings. Let's get to meditating. Get in a comfortable position, totally relaxed, with no distractions. Take a deep breath and listen closely. You are in an ice factory like in my film The Big Boss. A whole bunch of bad guys approach and let the sound of the one inch punch wash show over you. Total relaxation. Now, picture yourself in the hall of mirrors like in that movie. Enter the dragon that I was in, see your own image reflected back at you, and smash it. Mirrors are only useful when they are broken. This is a pure one hondo p maximum chill, inspired by my mantra of be like water. Here are some water sounds. Think of the way water flows down from the sky or over rocks, or into the big glass of water I drank before I started recording this. Actually, have some coffee too. We choose also made of water. Oh boy, that's a lot of water that I drank and water is super watery. Right, it's like mostly water. It looks like I'm going to have to cut this shot to enter the bathroom. Okay, I'm back, I'm centered, and I'm ready to get to our last game. I am too. But before we do that, we have to take a break. We'll be right back very soon. Eric, play us some chat chat Champion music. Please one to chat Champion Sally. Who was Marie Curie? You may remember me from winning multiple Nobel prizes or paps from my episode of the Who Warst Podcast where I played myself. I wanted to take a moment to read one of my favorite reviews about the Who Was Podcast. This is from Shake and Bay and it reads loved this Me and my little sister love this show more. Please. Our faith is Arietman. If you want to hear your review read on the air, make sure to subscribe, like and review to the oas podcasts in the I heard Radio up or wherever you give your podcasts revoir or should I stay ABIENO. Welcome back to the Who Was Podcast. Today we're discussing who was Clara Barton and who was Bruce Lee When we last left up, Eva had six points and Natalie had eight points. And now back to your host, Elliott Caitlin, thank you be and with not a moment to lose, let's get right into our next and final game, Converge of Greatness. In this multiple choice game, we'll explore how our famous people connect, overlap or converge, choose the best answer for each question be asked. And because this is our third game, each question is worth three points, so this is still anyone's game. Ava Europe. First, Clara Barton took many things away from her visits to Switzerland, and Bruce took away the number one box office slot in Asia with his first film, The Big Boss. From this movie which ends in Switzerland. What was the name of that movie? Was it A Ingmar Bergman's Wild Strawberries, B Swiss Army Man or see the Sound of Music. I think it's B. I'm so sorry. The answer is ce The Big Boss shattered box office records and the Sound of Music, which up until then was the number one film in Asia, had to say so long, farewell all vet us in goodbye to the top slot. Okay, Our next question goes to Natalie. Both Bruce Lee and Clara Barton challenged the roles society built for them. Bruce refused to take any part that showed Asian Americans in demeaning roles, and Clara challenged this belief in her time. Was it A that women shouldn't be on the battlefield? B that working at the patent office was boring? Or see that only married women could ride horses? A, that's right. The answer is A. Many military leaders refused to let Clara and other women work as nurses on the battlefield, and nursing at the time was traditionally seen as a man's job until Clara's work helped to change that mistaken belief. Okay Eva, this next question is for you taken away b Both Clara and Bruce were authors. While Bruce's books included fun titles like Striking Thoughts and Bruce Lee Artist of Life, one of Clara's book titles was less exciting but still very impactful. Was the name of that book? A fifty one Practical uses for Gauze b Patent Pending The Life and Times of a Lady Patent Clerk or see the Red Cross of the Geneva Convention. What it is? Oh? Probably see? That's right. The answer is seeing. While the title feels like kind of a first draft, this book helped convince the public that neutral relief aid and bringing the Red Cross to America was a good idea. Although I like to think you can jazz up the title a little bit by saying it this way, The Red Cross of the Geneva Convention. What it is? Okay? The next question goes to Natalie. Clara and Bruce went through big personality changes in their lives. Clara was so shy her mother consulted doctors for a cure. And you may be surprised to learn this about a young Bruce Lee. Was it A he ran the street gang named the Tigers, b he suffered from polio and was often bedridden. Or see he was total enemies with his bully in class, Kareem abdul Jabbar. A. That's right. The answer is a. As a youngster, Bruce was caught up with the wrong crowd and his family sent him back to the United States as a teenager to keep him out of trouble. And Kareem abdul Jabar and Blues weren't in the same class as kids, but they were in the same class of people because they're both amazing athletes and actors and they were real life friends. Look, we love you, we think you're great. Come on the show and that's the end of the gay Oh that was fantastic. And while we wait for Jane to tell you the final points and wait for Kareem Abdul Jabbar too, I guess right in and tell us that he'd love to be on the show. I'd love to hear from our contestants. Uh, what is something that you were surprised to learn about Bruce Lee or Clara Barton? Natalie? Was there something that kind of surprised you or jumped out at you that that you found really memorable about either one of our figures. Well, I thought, it's kind of surprising how Clara Parton would be able to teach yourself how to take care of somebody and help get them back to good health in just two years when college takes four years in order to learn that. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, she she's really a self taught nurse back in the back in the day. Yeah, it's really amazing. How if you put your mind to learning something, you can learn it fast if you're excited about learning, or if you just worked really hard. And I think she worked super super hard to learn everything that she knew. Eva. Is there anything about Bruce Lee or Clara Barton that really jumped out at you? And I don't mean like Bruce Lee would jump out of you. Yeah, because he would jump out and go, but you know information that jumped out of you. Um, I'm glad of that. It was also really cool that Bruce Lee started off as a kid and you like gott and then when he grew older, he became a lot I know, I wish, I wish everybody like listening at home right now could see what you're doing, because I know exactly what you mean, but it's more of a visual thing. That he just became like very focused and was able to use his talent to like build a career for himself. It shows you that there's sometimes there's something that you're excited about doing as a kid, we're really good at doing as a kid, that you can make what you do for your whole life. And Bruce Lee was able to do it, and a lot of people are able to do it if you focus on it. Yeah, you have the discipline and you work hard, and if you listen to your teachers like Mr Bruno, unless you're like Clara Barton and you don't need a teacher like Mr Bruno. Mr Bruno, what about you? Do you think it's better for kids to listen to their teachers. I didn't hear that. That's the second time Mr Bruno has pleaded the fifth in his recordings with the Yeah, there's a lot. There's a lot that Mr Bruno's being very tactful about, which I really appreciate, which which makes him a great teacher. Yeah, thank you so much, everybody. Now we're here, it's the big moment. Jane, will you please announce our winner? I sure will. We have a winner of Natalie with fourteen points. Amazing. Congratulations Natalie, Ava, you played a fan plastic game. Natalie, you as the winner, have ten seconds now to give your shout outs. Who would you like to thank for your success today? Myself? Only yourself and nobody else. Love it to two seconds of shoutouts, eight seconds to bask in that glory. She did it right. That's the way to do it. Our winner and their library of choice, where we're receiving a selection of Who Was Books And I'm going to give a shout out to myself, I guess, but also to intern z Act, Jane, Eric Kinnie, Woody Food for being our Bruce Lee and to be of course, and a big thank you to both of our contestants, Eva Natalie, you played a great game. Thank you so much for being with us, and thank you at home or wherever you are for listening to this. That's right, I'm talking to you the listener.
