View descriptionShare

Today’s guest was Mick Thomas who is bringing his band, The Roving Commission, to the Theatre Royal in Castlemaine on Friday December 19. Like me, you might be familiar with Mick’s work with Weddings, Parties, Anything, that band or rollicking folk rockers from the 80s and 90s. Since that band folded, Mick has continued to perform and record original material and has been particularly busy of late, releasing his fifth album since 2019! We'll get in the mood with the lead track from Mick and his Roving Commission’s latest album, Come Go Away; "First Step in a Homeward Direction", followed by "Dreams of New South Wales". My interview questions went out the window from the get go as Mick and I settled into a conversation about the pros of the old ways with record company support and live music on TV, verses nagivating today's fractured and social media focused industry. We also talk about Mick's evolving role within the Roving Commission and the benefit of writing, recording and touring with a mixed gender band. I'll also play a live version of the old Weddings song, "Away, Away", as reinterpreted by The Roving Commission, we'll have the weekly gig guide and finish with a song by Keggin', who play Rock the Vine Part 4 this Saturday.
