From the WGLT newsroom, I'm John Norton. Governor JB Prisker visited OSF Healthcare headquarters in Peoria to sign new laws expanding health care access and lowering prescription drug costs.
Pritzker says the bills he signed into law will offer help to those who need it the most. One new law will change how pharmacy benefit managers are regulated, aimed at lowering costs and helping smaller local pharmacies. The other will expand the ban on prior authorization to include additional mental health services, among other changes.
Democrats in Illinois are sounding the alarm after US senators approved President Trump's tax bill. The bill does many things, including drastically scaling back funding to Medicaid and the food assistance program SNAP. Democratic elected officials and health experts warn thousands of Illinois residents will lose coverage, and rural hospitals serving low-income patients will close if the bill passes the House as well.
Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth vote no. In a statement, Derbin said, quote, It's a hell of a way to make America great, and Duckworth, in her statement says the plan will explode our debt. Students enrolled at Illinois Wesleyan University this fall will have additional academic options. The liberal arts university in Bloomington is adding majors in nutrition and physical education. A new concentration in quantum science and technology will also be available beginning in August.
And a small town event had a big time feel for kids in Leroy. Organizers of the annual T-ball Spectacular say the event teaches young kids about teamwork, sportsmanship, and how to have fun.
Jake Pedrazza volunteers for the
league. Let's be honest, like this probably means more to the parents and the family members as it does the kids a lot of times, but to see all the people show up like they do for this, it makes them realize how important this is.
Kids get their names announced with walk up music, play mini games, and get free ice cream and popsicles at the spectacular, which is the last game of the season. I'm John Norton, WGLT News.
