From the WGLT Newsroom, I'm John Norton. The normal town council has unanimously approved a 250 unit housing development that's near the Colli Ridge subdivision along Shelbourne Drive. Mayor Chris Ko says the development of upscale apartments and townhouses will still help reduce the community's affordable housing shortage if you want to increase affordable housing.
In your market you have to increase housing for everybody. About a dozen neighbors urged the council to reject the project, citing concerns about increased traffic noise and light pollution.
The president of ISU is expressing support for a state funded program that helps graduate students from underserved and non-traditional backgrounds finish their degrees. The federal administration promises lawsuits against DEI initiatives. And Thuli says the diversifying faculty Illinois fellowships help ISU grow its own professors.

The Illinois Board of Higher Education has paused the programs for assessment. Tarhuule says students from underrepresented backgrounds make up 34% of the student body, but less than 20% of the faculty.
The Lexington School District has unveiled its new STEAM edition at its junior and senior high school. The project added new ag, industrial technology, science, and visual arts classrooms. School board secretary is Jamie Farrell, who says it's an emotional moment as the district overcame financial struggles from over a decade ago. I raised my kids here to be able to attend our school, and 10 years ago I wasn't sure if my kids would graduate.
The Lexington School District also dedicated a time capsule of school's memorabilia to be opened in 2050, and Heartland Community College's baseball team is heading to the College World Series for 1/4 straight year. The Hawks earned their bid to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division 2 World Series by winning the Central District Championship over the weekend in Missouri.
