From the WGLT newsroom, I'm Ben Howell. The two members of Congress who represent Bloomington normal split their votes along party lines as President Trump's major policy bill has passed. Republican Darren LaHood says the so-called Big Beautiful bill will provide economic relief to Americans across the country. LaHood calls it a generational piece of legislation that works for Main Street, small businesses, farmers, and families. Democrat Eric Sorensen says the bill is immoral and un-American. He says it will make more lives expensive.
The bill extends the 2017 Trump tax cuts and slashes funding for Medicaid, food assistance, and clean energy programs. The bill passed by 4 votes in the House. Two Republicans voted no and now heads to the president's desk. And Raymond Bus of Champaign and Daa Armstrong from Bloomington were deep into a game of battleship at the Activity and recreation Center in Normal when the Republican mega bill passed. Armstrong's first reaction to the so-called Big Beautiful bill, I don't know what you're talking about.
Bucket says he stopped paying attention to politics as he's gotten older. Any bill they do it, the Republicans do it. It's a cut they're going to destroy Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. The Democrats do it, they're going to fund it all, but they both neither one of them do it. It'll still be there. Buckus and Armstrong say they avoid talking politics, but. Why worry? Armstrong says.
Illinois enters July following record high revenues for fiscal year 2025. Capital News Illinois reports the state received $54 billion in revenue in the fiscal year that ended June 30th, according to the legislature's fiscal forecaster. That was about $700 million more than the lawmakers budgeted for, but much of the surplus was already allocated in the budget that passed in May.
And the McLean County Fatherhood Coalition hosted a day of fishing at Miller Park Lake recently for dads and father figures to spend time with their kids. Bloomington mechanic James Kirk fished with his granddaughter.
Fathers tend to be absent more because they're working, and I just think it's a great way to get kids outside, get them involved in things.
Kirk says fathers and father figures should stress outdoor activities with their kids. The coalition developed events like Fishing Fun Day based on feedback from McLean County Dads. I'm Ben Howell.
