From the WGLT newsroom, I'm Ben Howell. Moody's rating service has kept the city of Bloomington's AA1 bond rating for the latest borrowing. The city is taking out $33 million for water department work. Deputy City manager Sue McLaughlin says that will help keep interest rates manageable for future borrowing. We are looking at the downtown streetscape as well as some other big projects, and I know Water is probably looking at another one next year.
Um, but some of the other projects may also be within the next year. Once the latest bond sale is complete, the city will have about 81.5 million in outstanding general obligation debt.
Republican Congressman Darren LaHood says he wants President Trump to call off his trade wars with Canada, Mexico, and the European Union. We should use tariffs to go after bad actors like China, uh, but it ought to be used in a strate strategic and tactical way. Um, and I think the sooner we can pause tariffs, uh, with our like-minded allies, the better. Trump threatened a 50% tariff on all goods coming from the European Union after easing up tariffs against China.
The University of Illinois extension Master Gardeners program is marking 50 years in operation. The organization teaches volunteers gardening skills they can take back to their communities. Horticulture educator Brittany Haigh says the extension provides research-based techniques as opposed to internet tips and family secrets.
A lot of them were like, well, I learned this from my grandma, you know, 50 years ago.
And that may not be the proper research based technique nowadays, so a lot of them are like, oh, I didn't know that, that's that's great that there has been the research done.
The University of Illinois extension has over 2200 volunteers statewide, and a class of Bloomington High School seniors raised about $1900 for a bench at a Connect Transit bus stop near the school.
BHS teacher Noah Tang says his class wanted to leave an impact at the school after they graduate. I think the biggest thing that my students got out of this is that it doesn't have to be a massive project to make people's daily lives marginally better. Tang says students led the fundraising and planning for the bus stop bench. I'm Ben.
