From the WGLT newsroom, I'm Ben Howell. Bloomington and Normal have launched a website that discourages people from giving money directly to the communities unhoused. Bloomington Mayor Dan Brady says those who want to help the unhoused should donate instead to the community organizations that address homelessness. We want to do the greatest good for those that are truly in need and make sure that it goes in that direction. The website BNhesolution.com lists 7 organizations that address community homelessness.
The McLean County sheriff says a state bill in response to Sonia Massey's killing by police will make vetting law enforcement candidates easier. The bill requires a full review of an applicant's employment history before a police agency can offer a job. Sheriff Matt Lane says many agencies already perform these checks, but the bill may expedite the process because it requires, um, other agencies to comply and to give us information. The bill has passed the state legislature and awaits signature by the governor.
Arts and culture groups across Illinois are asking the state for financial help after the federal government cut funding. The Illinois Humanities Council supports the McLean County Museum of History and other museums in Central Illinois. Humanities Council director Gabrielle Lyon testified before the state legislature.
Committee that the organizations they fund provide a key service to their communities. We are bringing the dollars back to communities. Communities are deciding what they want, what they want to do. Lyon says no COVID federal funding was used to hire any employees in the humanities.
Celiac disease is vastly underreported, according to a doctor in Noal who encourages more people to get tested. Doctor Yulia Bellapolsky is a gastroenterologist at Karl Broman Medical Center. She says more awareness of celiac disease could encourage more people to get tested sooner. Creating appropriate awareness where if you think you have these symptoms, you should see someone so that you can get the appropriate testing. Celiac is a digestive disorder linked to eating gluten.
A downtown Lincoln art gallery is one place for Bloomington Normal and Springfield artists to convene. Co-owner Jason Hoffman says the 3rd floor of Lincoln Art Institute features works from both places.
