From the WGLT newsroom, I'm Ben Howell, a Bloomington massage therapist says the city's efforts to regulate their industry may be a helpful tool to combat human trafficking. Melanie Dockery says she was opposed to the annual $250 fee the city had proposed. She can accept a one-time application but still has concerns about how much info the city will want.
There's some lingering feelings about being unsure of how this is going to unfold. Dockery
says massage therapists already pay state licensing fees every 2 years.
Illinois State's athletics director says direct payments to student athletes is the most dramatic change college sports has ever seen. Jerry Beggs says the details are still being worked out, but she says the Redbirds are committed to the new revenue sharing model. Year to year we just see the uh the competitiveness growing on what it takes to to to kind of seal the deal with a student recruit or a student athlete in the transport portal. The change results from a settlement in a landmark lawsuit against the NCAA.
Kids in the Livingston County town of Fairbury are enjoying their first summer camp in a new $6.4 million Boys and Girls Club building. Club executive director Jody Martin says it took years of planning and information sessions to raise enough money to get it done. The size of the community doesn't matter. It's the hearts of the people in the community. The 17,000 square foot space has a high school sized gym, 4 classrooms, a multi-purpose room, and a commercial kitchen for preparing meals.
Governor JB Pritzker has tapped Deputy Governor Christian Mitchell as his running mate for the 2026 election. Pritzker announced his choice in a campaign email. Mitchell is a former three-term state representative and Illinois Air National Guard lieutenant.
And a small town event had a big time feel for kids in Leroy. Organizers of the annual T-ball Spectacular say the event teaches young kids about teamwork, sportsmanship, and how to have fun. Jake Pedraza volunteers for the league. Let's be honest, like this probably means more to the parents and the family members as it does the kids a lot of times, but to see all the people show up like they do for this, it makes them realize how important this is. Kids get their names announced with walk up music, play many games and get free ice cream and popsicles at the Spectacular. I'm Ben Howell.
