From the WGLT Newsroom, I'm Ben Howell. Officers with Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested a man at his court hearing at the McLean County Law and Justice Center this week. McLean County Sheriff Matt Lane says it appears to be an isolated incident and no sign of any immigration raid. Normally they come for, you know, if they know there's going to be, you know, 3 or 4 people or
You know, um, or if it's a pretty serious offense. The man ICE detained, Emmanuel Moroin Jimenez, is awaiting trial on misdemeanor charges. He was sentenced to probation last year after pleading guilty to felony battery in McLean County.
Bloomington Mayor Dan Brady says he wants an advisory committee set up to promote communication between the city and downtown residents, businesses, and building owners. Brady says that body can make sure people know about streetscape construction closures of roads and sidewalks in front of businesses.
Who's going to be that department that only takes the complaint, does something about the
complaint?
Brady says he and the council will remain big cheerleaders for the downtown.
Over the summer, anyone in McLean County 18 years old or under can get free breakfast and lunch at participating schools. One of the kids who takes advantage of the program almost every day is Trinity Lutheran 4th grader Georgina. I think it's like really nice and I like that they like if you don't like the food you're able to get like something like the peanut butter jelly sandwich. Meal locations, times, and menus can be found on the District 87 and Unit 5 websites.
This Sunday marks the 13th anniversary of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. Democratic US Senator Dick Durbin celebrated the anniversary with a speech on the Senate floor urging his Republican colleagues to protect DACA amid lawsuits challenging its legality. If you're going to make this a better place to live, we not only want you, we desperately need you. Durbin was a lead author of the DREAM Act, which passed Congress in 2023 and gave undocumented immigrants who grew up in the US a chance to become citizens.
And one person has died and another was hospitalized after a crash in eastern McLean County. Authorities say a sedan and motorcycle collided at around 7:30 this morning in Blue Mound Township near Ellsworth. The motorcyclist was an adult male pronounced dead at the scene. A juvenile male was driving the sedan and was transported by ambulance to Karl Broman Hospital with minor injuries. I'm Ben.
