From the WGLT newsroom, I'm Ben Howell. Bloomington Mayor Dan Brady says the decision by the County Board Executive Committee against approving a hiatus on sales tax sharing drives home the seriousness of the matter as talks continue about the intergovernmental agreement to fund mental health and other services. Elected county board members to understand the delicacy of this. The city of Bloomington and Town of Normal have asked for a one year pause in sales tax sharing because the fund has a lot of unspent money in it. Brady says the town and city started out asking for a halt of more than a year. Brady says a lot has changed since the

The agreement began a decade ago, and there are plenty of places within Bloomington that money could go. And Normal city manager Pam Reese says the town of Normal and city of Bloomington have in effect pre-funded county mental health services through the sales tax sharing.

Since the intergovernmental agreement was adopted, the sales tax revenue stream changed a bit.

And internet sales, uh, now add to the sales tax. And so the county has been receiving more than we had anticipated.

Rees says the county has $20 million in unspent sales tax money from the intergovernmental agreement and the town and city fork over $400,000 a month. Reese says since there is a healthy fund balance, now is a good time for the governments to discuss what the agreement looks like going forward.

Public work crews have been working on cleanup efforts after a strong thunderstorm rolled through the Bloomington Normal area yesterday. The storm had wind gusts that reached 60 MPH, according to the National Weather Service. Bloomington's emergency communications Center handled more than 100 calls for service during a 90 minute window following the mid-afternoon storms. The calls were mostly downed power lines and electrical hazards.

Appointments are now available for household hazardous waste collection taking place October 4th at the Interstate Center in Bloomington. Collection of household materials like oil-based paint, batteries, and landscaping chemicals will be done by appointment only to regulate traffic and wait times. Any Illinois resident can sign up for a time at hHW McLean.org. I'm Ben.
