From the WGLT newsroom, I'm Ben Howell. The Bloomington Fire Department is studying where a new fire station could improve emergency response times. Fire Chief Corey Matheny told the Bloomington City Council the city has needed a new station on the city's northeast side for a long time, but there are other parts of the city.

Where response times could improve. I'd love to be able to build a station everywhere at the same time to cover those those needs, but um I know that's not physically possible. The fire department saw an increase in calls for service last year, including a 9% increase in structure fires.

Any big transformational project is complex, and the more complicated, the more room there is for differences of opinion, vision, and resource gaps. Former Bloomington Mayor Umboko Mulambo says you should not count on a project to be straightforward. It can happen in a zigzag way. It doesn't necessarily happen right away in the way that people want it. For example, Mulambo says the final version of the Bloomington library expansion emerged only after several other ideas failed to gain support, including a branch library, a partnership with Connect Transit, and a bigger expansion.

OSF Healthcare's Bloomington Hospital is on track to help patients from across the state. Saint Joseph Medical Center cut the ribbon on a new intensive care unit today with more beds, bigger treatment areas, and updated technology. OSF President Emi Shim says patients are beginning to travel to Bloomington for care. We, you know, happen to have a pretty uh good resources in the community, but most importantly, Saint Joseph Medical Center has the services that they are needing.

To get better health care. Shim says the renovation will help them continue to serve a wider range of patients with critical health needs. It's hard to make a big splash in your first term in Springfield. That's according to a new state lawmaker who says you have to start small to make a difference. Republican state senator Lee Arellano was previously the mayor of Dixon. He says when you are new, you have to learn quickly and ask questions.

One of the things you immediately bring to the table is a

Set of eyes. You are looking at practices and procedures and dynamics for the very first time and making judgments on them.

Arellano spent his first term helping pass bills that helped modernize government systems such as updating state government websites and electronic filing for government documents. I'm Ben Howell.
