From the WTLT newsroom, I'm John Norton. The McLean County Board has approved allowing Connect Transit to provide its rural transportation services to the county. Chair Elizabeth Johnston says the county wants to see how the service can be improved over time.
When
we brought it to Connect Transit, the intention.
Was to replace the current services and then over the next, uh, you know, 6 months to a year is to really start exploring what other needs are in our rural
areas.
Johnston says the county will explore rural access to employment, medical services, and grocery stores. Connect Transit is set to take over rural transportation in July. The board withdrew from an agreement last year with Showbus.
Illinois lawmakers have passed a bill requiring applicants to provide past employment documents when applying to become a police officer. Democrat State Representative Cam Buckner is from Chicago. He says the bill is intended to prevent tragedies like the one that took the life of Sonia Massey. She was shot and killed by a cop in Springfield last July. I spent some time with her family today and looking at her picture.
And seeing that she has her mother's eyes and her dad's smile, but moreover that she should be here today. This legislation is a part of our effort to make sure what happened to Sana never happens again. Officer Sean Grayson, who faces murder charges for the killing, got a job with the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office despite a history of misconduct. The bill is passed in both chambers and now goes to the governor's desk.
And downtown Lincoln will be bustling tonight for the 1st 3rd Friday of the year. Lincoln Art Institute's galleries will also be open to the public. Marsha Cook is co-owner of the Art Institute. The whole downtown's closed off. There's a bunch of vendors. There's a band. There's food, a bunch of games for the kids, so.
And then we have a little art area over here so it's been really fun. The facility paused exhibitions in 2022 to focus on building renovations. They also host Lincoln's annual art fair in August alongside the balloons over Route 66 Festival. Third Fridays take place in May, June, and July only. Chance of showers late this afternoon, some of which could be severe. Today's high near 87. I'm John Norton, WGLT News.
