From the WGLT newsroom, I'm John Norton. The McLean County Center for Human Services is preparing for an increase in demand for its 24/7 mobile crisis team. The Trump administration cut funding for a hotline that provides mental health support for LGBTQ callers starting July 17th. Director Joan Hartman says the center is prepared if more local residents need help.
Our staff are pretty well trained.
To be able to address any issues that the kids might have,
Hartman anticipates LGBTQ youth to become more reliant on the mobile crisis team. One day after Congress passed President Trump's huge reconciliation bill, a group of about 40 protesters gathered in downtown Bloomington to peacefully protest on Independence Day. Retired librarian Diane Mathers says she attended the protest because she's concerned about treatment toward marginalized and less fortunate people.
Mathers says she fears democracy will not prevail. When the Supreme Court said that a president is immune to anything related to their official duties that gave him complete immunity that made him a king. The group Blooming to Normal 5051 organized the protest. The Illinois Secretary of State is giving out $20 million in grants to over 600 public libraries. The Bloomington Public Library will get $116,000. Normal will receive $78,000.
Secretary of State Alexei Giannoullius says given recent actions at the federal level, it's important to support libraries. We need to be supplying our libraries with the necessary funding to not just continue current programming but to implement new initiatives, programs, services, and digital strategies that will allow them to enhance their mission. In March, the Trump administration signed an order to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which issued $180 million in 2023 to libraries nationwide.
And the newly renovated Fairview Skate Park in Normal is set to reopen later this month. The skate park has been closed since October for extensive renovations and equipment replacement. The public is invited to a reopening community event from 2 to 4 p.m. on July 22nd. I'm John Norton, WGLT News.
