A tornado has damaged at least 20 properties on the Kapiti Coast.

A 16-year-old is in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, after the wind destroyed his sleep out.

Four homes at least are reported to have lost their roof, and another was knocked off its piles.

An Urban Search and Rescue drone crew will do an aerial assessment this morning.

FENZ Assistant Commander, Steve Hudson says it was a big blow.
