In the Gospel of Mark, we read these words. And as he was going along by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men. And they immediately left the nets and followed him. And going on a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were also in the boat mending their nets, and immediately called them, and they left their father's Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and they went away to follow him. Let's pray together, Lord, we thank you for this day. We thank you for loving us. We thank you for the privilege that we have to follow Jesus. So teach us today in this passage in Mark chapter one, help us to be followers, true followers, and not just fickle fans. For we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Hi, friends, and welcome to this episode of the Weekly Wisdom podcast from pray dot Com. I am pastor Jeff Shreeve from Texarkana, Texas, and today I want to share the differences between being a fan of Jesus and a true follower of Jesus. Now, in Mark chapter one, we witness the dawn of jesus ministry as he begins to call his disciples. And remember this, Jesus is not seeking fans. He's looking for followers. When we hear his call, follow me, it's not just a command, but it's also an invitation. So have you obeyed that command? And have you answered his invitation? Are you truly a follower of Jesus or are you merely a fair weather fan? In this devotional we'll explore the differences between being a fan and being a true follower. Difference number one, Fans know about Jesus, but followers know Jesus. In John chapter seventeen, Jesus said these words in verse three. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent you. See, eternal life isn't knowing facts and figures about Jesus. It's about having a deep personal relationship with him. It's about an intimate knowledge that penetrates your heart, not just information that resides in your head. So fans know about Jesus, but followers really know Jesus. Umber two, Fans want the blessings, but followers want the bless ore. You know, Fans are primarily interested in what they can get from Jesus. They focus on his blessings and what he can give them, what they can gain if they are associated with Jesus. They view religious service as a means to acquire these blessings. Followers are very different. They seek Jesus for who he is, not for what he can do for them. They desire an intimate connection with the blesser rather than the blessings. They seek God's face, not God's hand. Now, in John chapter six, we see a clear example of this distinction. After Jesus miraculously fed thousands of people. They initially hailed him as a prophet, and they sought him for more blessings. But when he spoke about himself as the bread of life, some turned away because they were more interested in the gifts than the giver Followers. True followers, on the other hand, seek the face of Jesus, valuing him above all else. And then difference Number three. Fans bailout, but followers are all in. Fans are very fair, weathered friends. They follow Jesus when things are going well, and they quickly abandon him when they face challenges or disappointments. In contrast, followers are fully committed, regardless of the circumstances. Jesus experienced first hand many who initially praised him on Palm Sunday and then a few days later demanded his crucifixion. Crucify him. Crucify him. Not this man, but Barabbas Hey. Followers don't back down or abandon their faith when the going gets tough. Remain devoted, even in the face of persecution and adversity. They have surrendered their hearts completely to Jesus. They've left their old way of life behind, and they're all in for him. So as you examine your own heart, are you a fan or a follower? A fickle fan or a true follower? Have you truly bowed your knee to the lordship of Jesus Christ? If not, you can do it today. Just pray with me, Lord Jesus, I need you. I don't want to be a fan of yours. I want to be a true follower and Lord. Right now, I surrender my life to you. I yield myself to you. Come into my heart, Be my Lord and Savior. Change me from the inside out. Make me the person you want me to be. Lord. I want to follow you, no matter where it leads, no matter the cost. You are God, you love me, You died for me on the cross, and I give my life to you in Jesus' name. Amen. Well, thanks for listening to this episode of Weekly Wisdom.
