After a four-year hiatus the Christmas Carnival returns to Ellerslie Racecourse this summer, the Boxing Day and New Year's Day races. Major highlights on the racing calendar, and one of the country's richest annual sporting events.

CEO of Auckland Thoroughbred Racing Paul Wilcox said the two events are very significant in the racing community in New Zealand.

Paul Wilcox: CEO of Auckland Thoroughbred Racing

Dave McCalman is a three-time Paralympic medalist for New Zealand.

In 1980 he misjudged the depth of the water when hejumpedinto a water hole and sustained serious spinal injuries.

Following his disability, he moved into able-bodied basketball coaching, leading teams to national titles before later taking up para-athletics.

In Barcelona in 1992 he made his paralympic debut entering in the javelin, becoming New Zealand Paralympian number 80. 

He won a javelin silver medal at the 1996 Paralympic Games and two golds in javelin and the restored pentathlon at the Sydney 2000 Paralympics.

Dave McCalman recently retired after 19 years working for the Helberg Foundation, but is still very involved in sport, and he's published a book on his life.

The book is called Here's to Life and All That Jazz.

Auckland FC have their latest game in the A-league men's this afternoon. 

The team is back at Go Media Stadium in Auckland and are unbeaten so far with a 100% winning streak at home. 

Fullback Callan Elliott said drawing with Melbourne FC was a good result, despite not playing to their typical standard in the first half of the match. 

Elliott has been in both Wellington and Scotland in the 2022/2023 season, he reflects on his journey to joining FC. 

Today's game against the Western Sydney Wanderers will be his 50th A-League match.
