Are fans being priced out of games? 

There’s been quite a bit of talk recently regarding the price of tickets for top sporting events such as the All Blacks, and whether it’s becoming too expensive for the fans. 

Sports Prompter Dean Lonergan offers his insights on prices and what gets fans through the gates. 

“There’s a fine line between money coming in, and charges you can, the price you can charge, but at the end of the day, you’ve got a financial responsibility.”

Dean Lonergan: Sports promoter on the ticket prices for top events, if fans are being priced out of attending

New Zealand’s oldest rugby club is scrapping all junior fees in a bid to keep kids on the field.  

Nelson Rugby Football Club says the decision’s been brewing for a couple of seasons, but the support of the community means they can finally move forward with it.  

Junior club captain Lisa Trusler told Piney that families all over are struggling financially at the moment, and sport is one of those things that unfortunately falls off the end. 

“We just want to do whatever we can to get people back into it.”

New Zealand Rugby is acknowledging an ongoing shortage of specialist front rowers at a club level. 

Some clubs are even struggling to field teams due to a lack of props and hookers available to them. 

NZR’s Head of Rugby Participation and Development, Mike Hester told Piney it’s unfortunately not a new problem.  

He says it’s one they’ve faced for some years now, and they’re doing some work in both the short and long term to try and address it.
