With a musical career spanning over 15 years, Hlalefang Nomganga popularly known as Fang Darhythm, he is considered a musical mastermind, all thanks to his rich musical and cultural background which nurtured his gift.

As an experienced DJ, sound engineer and house music producer, Fang's sound is made up of Afrotech, deep and soulful house rhythms that uplift the spirit.

"I grew up listening to a lot of Jazz, Neo-Soul, Disco Classic, '90s R&B and Hip Hop, kwaito and Afro-Pop. I got introduced to house music in the late '90s... I instantly fell in love with soulful house music," says the mastermind DJ.

"I was born in Johannesburg, shipped to Koffiefontein, Free State to live with my grandmother as a two-week-old infant. When I was 12 years old, I met my father and then moved to Secunda, Mpumalanga to live with him and my stepmother. Shortly after their passing in the year 2000 and 2002 respectively, I moved back to Johannesburg to live with my mom and I’ve been living here ever since 2002."

Fang's love for music stems from his mother's side of the family although his father was a music lover as well. "I learnt a lot about music from just listening to the radio. Growing up, YFM played a huge role as a youth station at the time," he reflects on his childhood. "My role at family gatherings was always handling the music because I used to collect a plethora of music. I also knew different types of music and most importantly what to play and when. I still have some cassettes, CDs and a few LPs (vinyl)."

During his time in the industry, Fang has collaborated with international artists like Louie Vega, Portia Monique and locally with Nutown Soul and Kholi.  "As soon as I matriculated, around 2005, I registered to do media studies at Boston Media House and majored in Radio and Sound Engineering because I needed something to fall back on just in case the music thing didn’t work out," he said.

"Like most DJs, I didn’t have my own equipment to practice with, so I had to travel long distances just to practice for an hour or so with somebody else equipment. Depending on where you go, I learnt that the equipment was never the same and that was the trick back then, hence it was important to know how to master everything at your disposal because you just never know what you gonna find at your gigs."

Locally Fang makes up one-half of the house music duo, The Rhythm Sessions – which has a significant following in the local music arena, following the release of their first album in 2017 and EP in 2019.

Through The Rhythm Sessions, Fang also produced, presented and shared live mixes on the duo’s radio show, House of Love With The Rhythm Sessions on Kaya 959. He is currently a resident DJ on Radio 2000 Weekend Mornings with Mlu & Nala.
