National Gardens Week by the South African National Biodiversity Institute is drawing to a close, with today and tomorrow marking the final days of this nationwide celebration of nature. The initiative has been offering free access to selected botanical gardens and discounted entry to the National Zoological Garden of South Africa as part of its 126-year celebration.

Joining us to talk about the importance of reconnecting with nature and protecting South Africa’s rich biodiversity is Thompson Mutshinyalo, Director of Conservation Gardens and Tourism at SANBI.

This week has been World Glaucoma Week, raising awareness about Glaucoma, a serious eye
condition that damages the optic nerve and can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated early. According to the World Health Organization, at least 2.2 billion people worldwide live with
vision impairment, with about one billion cases considered preventable. To tell us more, we’re joined by Thembela Moyo, Optometrist and owner of FreshVision Optometrists.

A new South African film, Grade 10D, is gaining attention after a successful premiere in Limpopo. The film explores the realities of the public school academic ranking system through the lives of learners placed in the school’s so-called “worst-performing” class. Written by Shumelani Mapholi and directed by Joseph Muthaphuli, the story tackles real issues affecting young people — from peer pressure and
subject choices to mental health. After drawing strong support in Limpopo, the film is now heading to Gauteng cinemas.
