Gresh & Keefe -  Kerry Hebert (52) shares she battle with kidney cancer

View descriptionShare

Kerry is a 4th-grade teacher in Taunton Public Schools

Kerry was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma, or kidney cancer, on her birthday - September 11, 2019.

Earlier in the spring, she developed an annoying cough. It at first was attributed to asthma, reflux or allergies.

She then lost her appetite and ended up losing about 30 lbs. and became very tired. By August, she developed a fever with sweats/chills throughout the day and night

She asked for a CT scan but her primary care doctor did not order one.

In September, when she went back to teach her 4th grade class it became apparent, she needed medical help.

Kerry went to the hospital and the doctor ordered urine testing, blood testing and a CT can. They found the kidney tumor that day.

She's been treated with surgery and then immunotherapy. She's currently not in treatment.

She loves scrapbooking and crafting as well as walking and spinning.

She says she loves being treated at Dana-Farber. "Everyone I have encountered has been positive and empathetic. Dr. Braun is always realistic and truthful, but kind and caring. There is nothing better than his smile and enthusiasm when scans look good!"

She says even the attendant that greeted her on the morning of her surgery has touched her. "My husband and my friend had to drop me off at the front door due to COVID regulations at that time. The man who opened the door for me saw that I was upset and proceeded to encourage me, saying "We've got you, you are going to be fine, etc.) It helped more than he could know."
