Getting diagnosed with a major illness impacts not just the person diagnosed, but everyone else in their life too. Former Tactix coach Marianne Delaney-Hoshek is a Cancer Society ambassador who's had multiple brushes with cancer. First her father passed from skin cancer, then in February of this year her husband was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer.

You probably recognise Allyson Gofton best from the iconic Food in a Minute, a one minute long cooking show-advertisment hybrid that she hosted for 13 years. After leaving Food in a Minute, Allyson has continued to write cookbooks, including her latest, Give which is all focused around creating delicious food to give as a gift. 

However, you probably don't know the struggle Allyson and her family went through for years after her son Jean-Luc suffered a severe concussion during a high school hockey game. Allyson believes that concussions have become so commonplace and normalised that most people don't fully understand how dangerous they actually are. 

In the epsiode, Allyson tells Toni Street the heart-wrenching story of what Jean-Luc went through and the years long recovery it entailed, the incredible toll it had on their whole family, and why she believes there should be more education around concussions. Plus she shares the inspirational story that inspired her to write Give, and how buying the book can help support breast cancer research in New Zealand.

Allyson Gofton: A mother's terrifying experience with concussion

Aaron Fleming hasn’t had the easiest run in life, when he was 16 he suffered multiple collapsed lungs which lead to multiple major surgeries and years of recovery. This lead to a period of depression, and addiction to pain medication. After this his surgeon said he’d never be able to physically exert himself again. To prove his surgeon wrong, Aaron decided he was going to compete in an Ironman, an incredibly difficult, full-day triathlon.

Cut to now, Aaron has completed more than 20 Ironmans across two decades and is heading to Hawai'i to compete in the world championship. Aaron credits connecting with nature as a huge part of his recovery, and is now on a mission to educate people on the healing abilities of nature. 

Whether it's simply spending time in your garden or taking a walk along the beach, or heading out for big, multi-day treks in Aotearoa's most remote locations, the power of connecting with nature cannot be overstated. But even more importantly, giving nature a helping hand can have unexpected benefits to you own wellbeing.
