In 1962, one of the most dramatic moments of the 20th century seemingly brought the world to the edge of nuclear war when the "Cuban Missile Crisis" unfolded. The standoff between the U.S. and the Soviet Union led to blockades of Cuba and eventually a withdrawal of nuclear weapons by the U.S.S.R. from the Caribbean island just 90 miles away from the U.S.
